Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

While the rush defense was concerning, it’s a little unfair yesterday when the defense had so many short fields. They stop MSU with a sack on the first series, and then Boo fumbles. I was reminded by another fan that MSU ran on us last year. Their pass game is not quite like Heupel’s because they do almost nothing vertically.
Boo didn’t fumble. That was Stayley

Edit: sorry saw Marco already answered

McCoy, Hobbs, and moi getting healthier should help our defense immensely. Also, the freshmen DL getting so much playing time early will help later in the season.

We desperately need McCoy back so we can play man much more and bring safety help up for the linebackers. They are getting abused right now. Love the effort by Telander, but we need to see more freshmen and Spillman. Not sure what is going on with burns unless he is in the doghouse but some media had him making plays all camp.

Looking at it repeatedly, it struck me that the defender lost his balance when Brazzell swiped his arm down to remove the defender’s hand that was pushing against Brazzell if that makes sense. Was as bad of an Opi as I can ever recall seeing.
The ref that threw the flag was honestly understandable. In full speed from his angle it could have definitely looked like OPI. The issue is with the weak spineless ref that knew he had the best look at it and knew he didn't see OPI and refused to stand up to the back judge and tell him that the play happened right in front of him and that the defender was not pushed down.

Serious question. If we had made that kick against Georgia would we be the talk of College football. I’m surprised no analyst has brought up the offseason and how Hepuel has done a damn good job of keeping the boat full steam.
Yeah other than Saban on Gameday saying he thought we were the most dangerous 1-loss team in the country, we don't ever get the respect from the media we deserve... I have my issues with Heup, but he's done an overall amazing job with the hand he's been dealt since being the head coach, and media should be talking more about our QB and injury situation with key starters out basically the entire season so far, yet we are still undefeated and have found a way to win even when we are off and playing like 'ish...

Listened to Volquest before I got to watch the replay.

Eric Cain said Joey had a so so game.... Um...he was elite. What a dumb take and I really don't blame him for the Kitselman drops. Yeah ball placement wasn't perfect, but it shouldn't have to be and it unlikely on those types of throws. If Joey wasn't able to make those throws we woulda lost the game. The game tying drive was some elite stuff.

Wouldn't trade Joey or Brazzell for anyone.

Mississippi State is 5 million times better this year, but my goodness the mental errors were egregious, we aren't getting enough penetration in the middle and Carter is the only LB playing at a high level.

I still think if everything that could go wrong didn't go wrong we would have crushed them. The first two drives they had, our defense was all over them. The only way they stopped us was refs, Stayley punt return and drops.

Like...I think we start up 14-0 If Stayley doesn't botch it. The Mike drop, Two deflected anomalous picks and the Brazzell bs PI call.

State was running the ball well, but had we gotten them in a hole early, they pass more and their pass pro sucked.

Time to polish things up over the bye. Joey won't be watching a UCLA game at the wilted rose bowl, it's a revenge game, it's at home and thus we destroy Arkansas next.

TN won’t make it in if it comes down to us plus those 4. Especially if it’s 2-loss us and a 2-loss UGA and/or Bama, even if we beat Bama in Tuscaloosa.

Basically, we gotta win out to get in.
If we beat bama in Tuscaloosa and we are both 10-2 at the end of the year we get in over Bama. Stop this nonsense.

Nope. No way we move up. Guarantee FSU stays in front of us to prop up Bama’s loss. We will stay same or maybe even drop a spot or 2. Vandy will probably jump us too. Winning on road in SEC in OT against a 4-0 team deserves to be penalized.
Edited. How about now?

I can not in good conscience put Vandy ahead of us or drop us after winning a sec road game.

I don't think Joey even made a bad pass on the first Kitselman INT. I think he was throwing to Matthews behind him curling toward the sideline and and Kitselman jumped the route. Would have gotten maybe ten more yards out of the play if Kitselman let it go over his head

What was the % Orange to White in the stands? On TV it looked almost 50/50. After the game it almost looked like a home game.
I would venture to say 35% or maybe even more was orange. We almost filled one side of the stadium. But they do have one closed end of fans still I think.

Quick thoughts:

1. Our lack of NIL/ recruiting commitment to safties is finally catching up to us. That room is one of the worst in the SEC.
2. Drops have to stop. MM, Staley, MK
3. Joey is a gamer, crazy to think we upgraded at QB
4. Clock management at end of 1H and 2H were abysmal
5. Don’t know why JH teams completely fall apart on the road. We make things incredibly hard on ourselves.

The Good: Dline, Brazzell, Hood, MM bouncing back after the awful drop.

But after 2010-2020 years I’m happy with winning.

Happy Sunday and Go Vols!
