That’s why preseason polls don’t mean anything to me, except it puts some teams (us) that are ranked lower behind the 8 ball to climb up all season and create the illusion that we and other teams are mediocre while the Notre Dame, Clemson, etc are elite and deserve a better shot to the playoffs. In the wise words of McGill…. I call Bull 💩.

  • Rule 3-5 (Substitutions and Equipment) requires that when a substitute enters, he must go directly to his position, and when a player leaves, he must go directly to his sideline. A team cannot “hide” players near the sideline or pretend a player is leaving when he’s actually staying to participate in the play.
  • Rule 9-2-2-b (Unsportsmanlike Conduct) explicitly prohibits “acts clearly intended to deceive opponents” by unfair means, including using substitutions or feigned substitutions.

"In NCAA college football, Rule 3, Section 5, Article 2 of the 2024-2025 rulebook addresses substitutions and prohibits using the substitution process to deceive opponents. Specifically, it states that teams may not use substitutions in a way that confuses or deceives the opposing team, such as substituting players to mislead about the play or formation. Violations can result in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty (15 yards). This rule ensures fair play and prevents teams from gaining an unfair advantage through deceptive substitution tactics."

"The prohibition on using the substitution process to deceive opponents (NCAA Football Rule 3, Section 5, Article 2-d) was enacted in 2014 as part of updates to substitution rules.This change came from the NCAA Football Rules Committee's efforts to promote safety and fairness amid the rise of hurry-up no-huddle offenses. Earlier versions of Rule 3-5-2 focused on basic substitution limits, but the 2014 addition specifically addressed "rushing quickly to the line of scrimmage with the obvious attempt of creating a defensive disadvantage" during substitutions or simulated substitutions, resulting in a 5-yard penalty. It was approved by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel and took effect for the 2014 season.

The rule has stayed largely the same since then, with minor clarifications in later years, like tying it to unsportsmanlike conduct under Rule 9-2-2-b for a 15-yard penalty if intent to deceive is clear. For instance, a 2015 Michigan game saw it enforced for "intent to deceive," and the 2025 rules book still includes the exact wording from 2014.Historical context: NCAA substitution rules evolved from unlimited free subs in 1941 (reverted in 1953 due to costs), back to unlimited in 1964, and this 2014 tweak to prevent deception. Wow. I stand corrected. I guess it's happened before and they made a rule to prevent it? Seems like the OU coaches should have known that.

You should start the season where you ended last season.
