Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I think so, but it’s interesting that Brazzell wasn’t “open” on either of his long TDs—especially the second. Y’all had to like the matchup when he was singled up, but I will be interested to see if those throws continue to have success. In both long TDs, the defenders were close enough to make a play but (taking nothing away from Brazzell, who played both perfectly and played through serious PI on the first) both defenders misplayed the ball by jumping or going for the ball too early.

It may be that Brazzell has that Moss or Calvin Johnson about him to win a bunch of those high arc passes, but those long, high throws will invite teams to start playing a centerfield safety.

Again, taking nothing from either JA or Brazzell, I think the incorporation of out-breaking routes and quick passes are the scarier evolutions in the offense in terms of trying to stop it while defending the run.

lol

please let teams play a "centerfield safety" and give us the entire middle of the field

please!! let it happen!

Imo Brazzell never lost his swagger. He just didn't have a QB that could anticipate throws or trust him.

He's playing now like he was at Tulane 2 years ago.
I'd say that bad QB play messed his head up some and made him think he was part of the problem. It's hard to believe how good Heupel was able to make that team look.

I think Herbstreit even referenced calling afternoon games in Neyland being some of his favorites because of the fans, atmosphere, sun going down, etc.

He said night games at Neyland are amazing, but those big afternoon games are special.
I don't mind the 3.30 games late in the year. It's a little warmer than a night game and it finishes up after sunset, so you get a little night game feeling. . . like the bama '22 game. They UGA game should've been a night game this year though.

He lost his swagger. But he also didn’t have a QB.

This video from the spring he talks about how last year he’d beat himself up after a bad play and how mentally he wasn’t where he needed to be. How he spent the offseason getting people to trash talk him in the weight room to get his head right. I guess to build mental toughness.

Whatever he did - it worked.

Aligns with what Basilio was saying last year. Brazzell wasn’t putting in the work when he initially arrived here and it showed. Hyatt went through something similar, got serious, then had his breakout. I think it’s a normal transition for many players as they have to overcome the SEC hurdle after being studs in high school or a lower conference.

Sham absolutely jumped, so not trying to blame officials.

BUT I will point out both of those 4th quarter, can ice the game drives we had...first being after the fumble recovery and the next being the one you mentioned we had false starts called on us.

I would've really loved to see Heupel just run a damn play trying to score there. Georgia had zero timeouts, we had 1 and 7 seconds. Dial up a quick hitter and see if GA is ready, if they get called for a penalty or if we can score on it. As long as Joey doesn't make a bad throw you have nothing to lose.
I was hoping for a fade route on 2nd down and then line up the kick on 3rd down. I guess it's too big of a risk to take when you're already in fg range.

Hopefully the Nico situation helps some guys realize just how green the grass is at Tennessee
I think so far this year two things are obvious
1-Nico not CJH was the problem with the 2024 offense
2-CJH and his offensive staff are showing the SEC and the country “Not so fast” on figuring out this “gimmick“ offense😎

Let's get him the Bilitnikoff

He may screw around and get one. 2 Biletnikof awards in Heupel's first 5 years. . . would be wild if he got the Biletnikof and Aguilar gets the Heisman. How many times have both awards gone to the same team?

*Happened once before. Devonta Smith won the Biletnikof and the Heisman in the same year.

Smart.

When you allow your joy and your self-esteem to be dependent on the performance of a football team, you have some things very out of balance in your life and you really need to assess some things. In years past it had become idolatrous to me and I was forced to repent and realign. Of course I'm disappointed, but I no longer get angry. I enjoyed the day and it was great to see UGA require multiple lucky breaks to squeak out a win. We'll get 'em next year. Or better, at the SEC championship game.

Now my daughter and SiL haven't quite internalized those spiritual lessons...
I am working on it. It had or still has got misplaced but now I am aware.

AP on 104.5 (paraphrase): Sanders is chomping at the bit to play, but strength isn’t there yet. Agent isn’t suggesting to sit out. Will rotate in but is undoubtedly still a starter once strength is back.

On McCoy, earliest he will be back is Arky.
The weakest link on the OL to this point is Umarov. And the OL has still been good. Sanders getting back 100% at some point and allowing us to move Perry to LG is only going to make this OL even more dominate.

I’ve already eaten crow on Joey so I’ll eat crow again for this one. I didn’t think the offense was trending in the right direction the past few years. Between the consistently underperforming WRs, QB miscues and pass blocking issues I was down on us coming into this year. Kelsey Pope, Joey Halzle and Glen Elarbee I was wrong about you guys. All of them have done nothing but get better at recruiting and coaching the past few years I am seriously impressed. I know it’s only been 3 games but the difference between this year and the last few years in terms of scheme and execution is really great to see.

It was sub par QB play and WR play. Our tackles weren't great either the last couple years either.

As far as Joey, if ya'll watched the dern film you wouldn't be that surprised.

Didn't see him dicing up UGA like that, but I assumed he would be really good.

Posting after despair Saturday. Glad you got caught up though.

I’ll see myself outta here again.

Go Vols
@SmyrnaATLVolisback

Seen you question linebackers and coaching. Given there has been 2 different coaches during CJH tenure (both who had prior success); is it coaching or scheme ?

Been disappointed with Carter’s performance to date and look forward to seeing the freshmen as the season progresses.

Does arch transfer to Tennessee next season to fix his problems and get drafted lol
CJH gotta be the best offensive mind in the game and our offensive staff and support people are damn good

I was thinking about this earlier this morning and wanted to get y’all’s thoughts.

What are the chances Heupel brings in a 4th or 5th-year senior, like Aguilar, this year to help bridge the gap to GMac or Faizon? We’ve seen how much better the offense looks with a veteran who can make the right reads and play without overthinking. My concern is whether a second-year MacIntyre or a true freshman Faizon will be mentally ready to run the offense at the level we saw under Hendon, or even how it seems to be operating now with Aguilar.

For the record, I think Merk probably transfers out. And while I don’t expect Heupel to bring in someone to directly compete for the job, I do think it’s an interesting debate worth having.
