It will probably be a veteran that transfers up or one that doesn’t mind sitting the bench at Tennessee. An emergency qb in case something drastic happens. It’s hard to keep three starter level qbs happy.

Again, does Merck not fit that bill or does he just want to transfer and we will be going to the portal for Merck 2.0?

He sucked. He had freak receivers, a great offensive line and running game, and off the charts defense. I could have won a natty playing qb for Georgia. Stetson Bennett was Georgia's Greg McElroy.

Stetson Bennett was way better than McElroy lol. I love hating on him, but they don't win titles if he actually sucked.

All that “time and effort” you speak of, invested into Merk, is a sunk cost at this point - you can’t get it back. Continuing based on misplaced “hope” is just throwing good money after bad.

You did say they should stop wasting time on Merck. What happens if the light comes on sometime this season for him? Not saying that he suddenly gets it, but what if he does? Meanwhile the coaches have stopped putting any effort into him and now we have to go into the portal when we could have 3 really good QBs on our roster that want to be here. You original post implied that the coaches should stop putting time and effort into Merck because he is hopeless and any additional effort is a waste. I say these coaches will not see it that way and if recruits see the coaches give up on their players then who is going to want to come play here except mercenaries.

I really don't understand why this is so surprising. They put Condoleezza Rice on the CFP for the love of the boner monkey gods. Maybe this year they can put Lady Gaga or Elton John on it. Condoleeza actually has football knowledge and is part owner of an NFL team, if I recall. I have heard her talk football and I’m good with her on the CFP.

I think reality is probably that Heupel and company still see a lot of potential in Merk who they can develop into a good D-1 quarterback. Not many coaches as successful as Heupel make a living giving up on redshirt freshmen quarterbacks based on 1 quarter of live action. Hell, Arch Manning is in his 3rd year and is having some early season struggles. Very few college quarterbacks are close to a finished product at this point in their careers. I say we let it play out and give the guy a chance. I see a good athlete with a lot of tools but have no idea if that will translate into a good college qb.

The more I see/hear about Joey Aguilar, his family, and the way the team talks about him, the more I like him. I feel like we've got the basketball version of Jahmai Mashack. Just a hardworking baller, that came from a family that loves him and now they all love UT. If Joey pulls this off Saturday (and I believe he/we will), he'll go down in VFL lore and be beloved forever.

Heupel knows what he's doing. I think Nico was a big name and a flashy pick to impress the fans but obviously he was overrated and didn't work out. I'm to the point that whoever Josh wants, I'm good with. The media and recruiting services can't be trusted...... I trust Coach Heupel

What does "wasting time on Merk" mean, anyway? I think you're describing a hypothetical that doesn't exist.

Week to week in the season, the coaches should be solely focused on winning the game that weekend, and that's going to be accomplished by pouring virtually all resources into the starter. During the season, development is going to be mostly independent study. If you aren't playing, your contribution is probably learning the other team's scheme so you can run scout team. And then paying attention in meetings in case you have to play.

I think it is very simple for Merk. He knows with >90% certainty whether he will be better than GMac one year from now. That will decide if he stays or goes.

GMac will do the same calculus when Faizon gets here.

Might he stay? Maybe. Would he though if passed by 2 younger guys? Unlikely. No one is saying he definately will i think most are just doing math for what most guys would do. Like our guy who went to the mocs several years back. He wasn't horrible, but he was not SEC caliber.

Looking back it happens more that we realize:

Quinten Dormandy (Houston and Central Mi)
Sheriron Jones (New Mexico)
BJ Coleman (Mocs)

Hell I forgot Kaiden Salter was on our roster.

I mean...I think you actually do have to be kind of crazy to want to be a head football coach, especially at a major program.

A lot of successful coaches are not exactly normal, down-to-earth, well-adjusted people. Psychopaths? No, but also not normal everyday people.
