Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

As soon as the game was over, I looked at my buddy and told him the loss would haunt us for awhile. Imo, it took us until 2021 to finally recover from it. Whenever I said it, I never nightmared it would take us 20 long years; but, I just had a feeling, in that moment, it was more than just a terrible loss.

Imo, it's the most devastating loss I have seen in my 40 years of watching the Vols. Last year was the first time since, we were in a position to win a National Title. I know that we went to 2 other SEC Championships after; but, I have always believed we backdoored our way into those. Until Heupel, I have never believed we were truly relevant since that night.

We win that game, that would have given us 3 SEC Championships in 5 years, and playing for a second National Championship in 4 years. Who knows where that may have propelled us into the beginning of the 21st Century. Instead, we had to settle for woodshedding Michigan in the Citrus bowl. We went from playing for another National Championship, to not even playing in one of the MAJOR bowls. Florida ended up in the Orange Bowl that year, and ranked #3 in the country, one spot ahead of us.

Thank you for your answer. So many what if’s from that game it’s hard to put them into perspective all these years later. Part of me is glad I wasn’t old enough to care about or remember that game.

This is the honest-to-God truth, I still remember everything from that day and night, just like yesterday.

A buddy and I drove to Murfreesboro to watch the game with friends. We had two girls with us...we were going to go out that night after the game. We had a flat tire on the way there. The girls, who couldn't have cared less about the game, started getting impatient and annoying around the 3rd quarter, and wanted to go out. By the time the game was over, one of them was too drunk to go anywhere. Not that it mattered, I was too disgusted to go out, myself.

That game is the main reason I hate conference championship games. I've always hated them; but, that one just proved my point. Imo, we should have never had to beat LSU in the first place...we'd already beaten them earlier in the year. Why should we have to do it again?? In college football, beating a team twice in a year has always been incredibly difficult, especially one coached by Nick Saban. I ranted and raved about it the rest of the night.

In so many ways, it was a truly lousy night, starting with that flat tire.

I genuinely don’t understand the Bama hype, it’s gotta be recency bias. Last year’s team was more talented and they lost 4 games with it. I could genuinely see them losing to 3-4 of: fsu, uga, sc, us, and lsu

I think they believe they’ll get better QB play play for that system + the Y2 bump for DeBoer. Proven winners usually win.

Exactly how I feel. Likely top 15 in money spent on a roster and we have people saying it’s ok for 7-5. Yikes

This is the most talented team Heup has had. We lack depth at receiver and safety but we’re pretty solid every where else.
Who said it was ok? I said it was likely depending on particular circumstances..and those circumstances would be no ones fault.

It doesn't matter if we spent 100 million on the roster, if that 100 mil is on the bench or in the rehab room all year.

And IMO until proven otherwise, this is not the most talented team Heupel has had...it's mostly paper talent so far, guys with a bunch of shiny stars next to their name outta HS given to them by needs selling subscriptions and whoring for clicks.

I agree that there is potential to become that...but none of these guys on offense have done anything yet...and we have a QB who has been with us only in fall practice and has never ran this system under live fire..and the young QBs behind him with a bunch of shiny stars next to their names couldn't beat him out.

Those are logical and true arguments for how 7-5 are possible...and it ain't hard to imagine..but..

I think if everything goes well..9-11 wins are likely.

I think most are just concerned with the unknown at QB.

And top 15 roster spend sounds sweet but also there’s likely 4 teams on the schedule that have a more expensive roster than we do.

For the record my prediction is 9-3 / 10-2.

@Glitch, I went back to this and now realize what you were going through. I’m so sorry and should’ve read the room and what you and your family had been going through and now for you, ESPECIALLY Mrs. Glitch. I apologize. I can be such an azz 😔.
No apologies necessary @Orangeredblooded. As I said yesterday, my sarcastic juvenile humor is a target for responses of a certain nature. Besides, this with my FIL didn't get really serious until last Tuesday and I believe that comment you quoted was from well before that. I likely deserved everything you were sending my way. I have never met you but I get a sense that you are a strong but very kind and compassionate person. I greatly appreciate your thoughts and prayers for Mrs. Glitch and our family. You are good people and I am grateful to have the opportunity to banter with you here on VN.

God people here.

Respect to @Glitch and @OrangeBlooded

Happy Monday

August 25, 2025: You will begin to take your first steps into the next spiritual season. You must deliberately leave the past behind in order to make the most of the this phase of existence. There are things to learn and things to do in preparation for what is coming up. Be flexible and do not discount the small things that could be the beginning of monumental change.2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
