Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I don't think so. Everyone knows what a wreck we were and he got us to the playoffs in y4. Everyone knows we were screwed by nico and Heupel did the right thing cutting him loose. If he goes 7-5 back-2-back, then he'll be getting some heat.
This is where I'm at. I don't WANT to see 7-5 but I'm certainly not breaking out the pitchforks if it happens. The QB situation alone is really shaky, add an injury or two...it's hardly out of the realm of possibility, but it also says nothing about Heupel's ability as a coach. We've been dealt a tough hand this season, most of it thanks to Nico.

I don’t think Josh's seat would get warm over 7-5, but the conversation to hire a GM should get nuclear after watching the Nico and WR situation.
A 7 win season isn’t enough for hot seat talks for Heupel himself, but conversations would definitely need to be had about the presumptive positions that held us back (wr, oc/qb coach, ol). And we would HAVE to change our stance on NIL. If we need a depth player that wants starter money, so be it. If a top tier player gets a second offer, match it and then some.

(people aren't going to love this but)

I don't think we're in a good place right now.

Aguilar will start game one, but talent wise he just doesn't have it. He'll probably be okay if we can scheme around him but he's really not a top tier QB in the SEC. There's a reason he transferred to a weak UCLA program.

Merklinger isn't playing with much confidence right now. He's got a good throwing motion and is a decent athlete but it's just not coming together for him. I think in a year or two he could be a *fine* starter for a low-end SEC or middle of the pack ACC program but he's just not a program cornerstone type guy.

George looks the part. He's by far the most natural QB of the bunch with far and away the most talent. If things go south with Joey, I hope we throw George out there and just see what he can do. He's way too skinny to physically survive the SEC grind week in and week out right now. I hope our OL can hold up if he's out there but the kid has a lot of natural talent. Really glad we took him over Deuce Knight last year. Will be fun with him and Faizon competing next year.
Fair points. So just to play the hypothetical game, what if we increase gmac’s weight training up until the first bye week, then instill him as the 2nd stringer with him a little heavier, and if JA struggles thru October let GMac have the reins in November

Lots of advice

No?!?! No way!!! Not the fanbase who is talking, right now, at this very moment, about hot seats and GMs and 7-5...as their team has gone 37-15, 20-12 (SEC) since Heupel stepped into the sh!t-pit; 30-9 in the last 3 years, with an Orange Bowl win and Playoff appearance. Surely, not that fanbase??

My big fear is that Joey tries to do too much. We have to remember he’s not been here long. I’m sure he knows the expectations here and I’m also betting he’s probably extremely motivated to “prove people wrong”. Sometimes those things can cause a player to try and do too much. So I hope Heupel and company are trying to keep him level-headed. He doesn’t have to be great.

This is undoubtedly the best secondary and LB core we’ve had. There’s nothing to suggest our dline takes a step back. This is the best Oline and TE’s we’ve had and the system JH has is designed to create lanes. It’ll come down to QB and WR. Heupel made the playoffs with a QB that threw for 2600 yards and 19 TD’s in 13 games, the lowest of any QB he’s ever coached

Yeah and Jayson Swain didn't mention them either today as far as I heard.

Yeah good sign they didn't seem stressed. Between them, Ainge and Swain...they definitely seem more worried about the WR's than anything. Ainge went into pretty good detail about all 3, from fundamentals and how they ran the offense and...I'm starting to think the QB's "struggles" are being overblown a bit.
I’m with you in thinking it’s being overblown. But I do believe Merk isn’t going to be a good QB here, but I hope I’m wrong. Good thing GMac is looking better than expected though. I hope if JA has to miss time that the coaching staff isn’t scared to play him.

...When they are not ridiculing a player's mother.

No one choses their parents. How do you not understand that?

And almost no one is not going to be viscerally angry in defense at mockery and public criticism of a family member.** You don't have to approve of something to ignore it when it is prudent to do so.

Boo is surrounded by high character coaches and teammates. Get out of their way, and let them handle it.

If you're on Vol Twitter, tell the yappers to STFU.

** I meant Boo, but the same also applies to his mom, who is reacting (in her own way) to fans harshly criticizing her son for having missed workouts (past tense) and having visited Colorado as a recruit (also past tense). It's all in the past. Let her watch Boo in peace.

Yeah I just don't see it with Merk at all. I think he needs a lot more time to be ready and will end up getting beat out by GMac and Faizon.
