Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

He had 2 other critical calls that game.

Going into half we completed a pass at the sideline and could barely toe tsp, but a defender put a hand on him and HE demonstrably wave for a live clock like a progress call to cost us a FG try.

Another review era overturn on a FL TD TOO. It was either a sweep or screen pass and our defender cut him and a post game photo clearly showed 2 knees down, body erect just outside the 1. He gave him the slide and the TD.

As I have shared too many times, some film crew recorded the officials post game meeting and there was no joy, they knew they just changed the game. The NOISE from that call caused a special meeting by NCAA and they put out a rare mid season rule clarification, the Gafney Rule.

Not long after this uproar AM was miraculously moved to Rocky Goode’s crew.., which of course meant he could not call UT games. Not much reading between the lines required on this.

As you can see this game ranks high on my mad list of officiating.
There should be a documentary about that game. That's 17 points.

Wow, I heard this too.
I also heard Basilio yesterday on his show say just the opposite at least about the QBs. He said everything he is hearing is that none of the three looks good at all. He said the coaching staff secretly knows we must rely on a strong running game and defense much like 2024.
Here’s hoping Ainge is right and Basilio is wrong.
Well Ainge was actually there lol.

Ainge is worried about WR. Now one issue was guys weren't practicing, but it's easily the biggest question mark.

Ainge is right. Aguilar was the guy he stepped on campus and people just seem to not want to accept it. His poise and moxy are what is needed for a young team. Receivers and QB will be fine. We will have bumps and need a couple games to start getting more in sync, but this team is way undervalued and could be Heupels most talented team (albeit young)

From listening to everyone I think the overall analysis is:

Joey is better on run than the other guys (those on the run throws are the core of Ainge positive talk - IMO)

Merk has been more accurate staying still from some reports.

Neither Joey nor Merk have pulled away from one another and many routes on air have not looked great. That includes passes not always looking crisp, but only a small part of practice has been observed. (Basillio negativity)

WR is as thin as 1 ply toilet paper and the guys with experience have been out more than anyone would like.

TE's look very strong.

So yeah it can all be true. Lean on defense, RB, and TE. One of these QB's needs to pull away, under pressure (poise) that is likely Joey. Higher ceiling is likely Merk.

I remember now, I really don't pay the NFL much mind.
I don't either, but I enjoyed every minute of KenSucky Levis Kensuckying on draft night. I turned it on because the crowd here was going wild. 😂

I usually just follow the Vols in the NFL by watching the plays posted here.

I mean Ainge doesn't think it's particularly close. Joey is easily the best one right now. Wouldn't doubt it.

You can watch Aguilar from two whole seasons ago where he lit it up. When I remember watching Merk look uncomfortable in a 60 point game against Chattanooga less than a year ago now.

Yeah routes on air versus live fire are 2 different things. Ainge is the only one I have heard that thinks the competition is not close. He will likely end up right regardless how close it is or isn't. Joey has so much more experience he's the obvious choice. But he may not be Hooker accurate either. It may very much look like Nico and Milton.

We're a playoff team if 2023 Aguilar shows up IMO

I disagree solely because Joey has proven he can hit a deep ball pretty consistently. Something those 2 dreamed of the majority of the time

I hope you are right. Those guys avoided INT's because they placed it in another zip code. Joey's INT's were high because he tried threading needles he didn't need to. 2 different paths, but similar outcomes. I hope he cleans that part up. He said in interviews he would work to take easier yardage to avoid those errors.

I can live with some INTs if the deep shots are hitting. Guys will be wide open per usual

Aguilar is 24
Merk & GMac are 19

Age ain't everything, but good indicator of poise, comfort. experience speaks for itself.

Joey may not keep the job the whole year, but fully expect him to start through week 3, at minimum.

IF a change comes early, look for week 4 after Georgia in wk3. There are 4 weeks & 3 games (UAB, MSU, bye, Ark) to ramp up before Bama.
