Buddy of mine who wins competitions all the time wraps with saran wrap for a few hours after he takes it off the smoker then rewraps the butcher paper around that for the rest period.

One of the most pointless structures ever. Doesn't block the sun, doesn't block the rain, just a lot of work for no practical benefit. I hate those things. Everyone I know who has them never actually uses them unless the weather is perfect and the sun is in the other side of the house. Why do you need a structure under those conditions?!

Build a gazebo and actually enjoy some benefits.

Rant over.

Haha yes pergola with a roof something like this. So not technically a pergola but not really a gazebo either.

My brother has one. Granted he's in a different tax bracket than I. He paid a contractor to build his. Has a built in metal dish firepit, and nice hard metal couch and nice furniture.

Sadly my firepit was built with my hands, even the wheelbarrow broke. Same for the ring around it.

Would love to see finished product when done.

Yeah sadly the labor will be coming from my back and not a contractor. In the early parts of planning the build, just want to make it right.

Going to be my kitchen space outside to free up our screened in patio and make it less cluttered

I totally get it. Do you have any experience with engineering software? Maybe there's some type of design app for iphones, one you can even use a photo of the area.

Most of pergolas Ive seen at outdoor places are flimsy. And wouldnt last.

May be worthwhile consulting with a contractor just to get ideas, certainly for things like load & accounting for how to anchor.

For instance we installed some outdoor fairings back in 2021. Wouldve never thought in 1,000,000 years that installing a 6X6 would be that big a PIA. My contractor friend was like 'yeah, it has to be buried 1/3 way up, tilted back, and this concrete needs to be used.' Basically I was doing everything wrong.

My guess is that he has so much talent that he feels he doesn't need to do the small stuff that everyone is supposed to do. He may believe his talent is enough to get by.
Then again, he may just be lazy but that will not fly in the NFL either. Somewhere along the way some bid ole dude just may whip his a$$

No engineering software experience. I’d be installing on top of used concrete. Good to know though for sure

Unfortunately the system is sort of set up to perpetuate this in many cases. Guys get by with more because they have freaky athletic abilities, thus reinforcing the idea that the same rules that apply to everyone else don't apply to them. Obviously these are rare cases, but unfortunately they happen. We seem them every year at some level.
