Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

My dad has had his house paid off prob 15 years, he’s going to be 67 later this year and he retired last year in May but still works for 2 days a week when he wants. Said he can’t just sit home and do nothing, so he works where he had been 44 years to help them and so he hasn’t and won’t touch his 401K except what he’s required to do. Works Tue and Wed and just does whatever he wants the rest of the week. I’m hoping to be like him when/if I get that age
The way to do it! I plan to be debt free by 43. Only have my house left and continue to max all retirement every year. I don’t ever plan to stop working as I would get bored and hope to leave my kids enough for generations to still use. We shall see. When I’m dead they could put it all on red and I would never know ha

I thought the practice reports were based on a few minutes of warm ups.

Anyway, I’m gotten pretty drama averse. This is the first year I haven’t read the practice reports. I have confidence in Heupel. I’ll look with my own eyes in…

19 days.

The trouble is, whoever starts, when things go great, a certain crowd will all say “I told you so.” And when something goes wrong a different crowd will say “I told you so.”

In the meantime I will listen to you guys and ponder.

It's going to be Swaguilar and he throws an accurate deep ball. :)

You are right and ppl will overreact to the first incomplete pass and punt.

Few musings

George looks great but unfortunately he's just so thin. I don't think he's quite ready to handle a full season physically. Aguilar will definitely be the guy going into game one imo.

Physically the freshman are quite impressive. David Sanders is a man. Brame, Radarious Jackson, Morris, Dye.

Linebackers will be the best we've had in a long time.

No real dynamic playmakers on offense it seems (right now at least).

Secondary will be better if McCoy comes back even close to healthy. DL isn't as twitchy but is really solid.

I'd expect OL to be better than last year. Moe was a good pickup. Pendleton is just a body. Perry will be good. Heard and Warren are in better shape.

QB play is really just a killer right now. Nico (and Carnell Tate) really hosed us as this could've been a real championship caliber team.
Thanks as always. I've lowered my expectations just on depth concerns.

Still thinking this looks a little like Kiffin's year. QB struggles early and strong late in season. Please just no Mt Cody kicks against Bama.

Not surprised on playmakers. Hurts that all the guys that could be difference makers either have no experience or are hurt. I imagine we will miss a guy like squirrel.

Practice report from today seems pretty good actually? RB’s being raved on and that’s the lone group we’ve not heard much about yet

(IMO): As I expected from the beginning of this QB race, it’s seeming more likely it will be JA starting, Gmac (the truth) backing up, Merk 3rd
They raved about running from scrimmage too. Line sounds good/decent. Sounds like recievers and QB connection is common and recurring weak spot.

JA underthrowing the deep ball a little and completing the pass is music to my soul.

He puts air under the ball and does not line drive it. It's literally all you need in this offense.

No more bazooka's tossed way over the head.

There is nothing Nico showed last year that said he should have started day 1 as a freshman over a 5th-year Milton.

JMO
If you pay someone two million dollars to come to your university, they plan to play you very quickly. And it’s not about what he showed, it’s playing for the future. Imagine if we went 8-4 with Nico growing pains instead of 8-4 with Joe. Nico is likely better at reading defenses last year and not so timid in the pocket. I think Nico would have been a better player last year had he had the experience.

I feel the same about Faizon. He is a generational talent. Take your licks early but go for two nattys his sophomore and junior year.

I find that hard to believe since Notre Dame had one of the best OL in the country and he played most snap on it with giving up no sacks only 6 hurries and 3 actual QB hits. Something don’t add up if he’s only a body here when he was really dang good at ND.
Bingo

i hate ND but one thing they do yr in and yr out is put together a good OL. You dont play that position there if you are “just a body”

One other thing about the routes on air

it's a dang WARM UP. Like, everyone just woke up and it's what...6am? 7am? Means jack sheise to me unless people are missing everything and dropping everything.

So they reported 5 dropped passes. In a warm up, early in the morning, out of what? 40+ passes thrown? Every QB has had the best day or worst day.

You know how it goes. When on another team, they are world beaters. For us, its just another body....

It's interesting to look back at Spring practice reports and even some comments shared from some HS coaches that got to watch a Spring practice where the consensus was that Merk was looking great. Can't help but wonder if the starting spot actually being open has put more pressure on him than he can handle. This obviously is all based on limited practice reports and maybe he's actually doing better in 11-on-11 when the media isn't there...but it sounds like he's struggling.

I think it’s funny if anyone is worried. Seems we have the same team as last year pretty much. Lean on a strong running game and have an inconsistent QB. Defense will be rock solid and really good. We went 10-2 last year and the schedule is better this year IMO. I think we can still get 9-10 wins with the same method as last year.

Passing game more like passing lame..lol

I think all three of them were better over the middle of the field in this regard. They threw plenty more with short-to-intermediate routes while we were out here and there were some receiver drops during this time as well. Mike Matthews dropped a hitch and Travis Smith dropped a slant over the middle. Remember, drops happen, and it’s fair to say some throws were off line.
The tight ends continue to be the best pass-catchers on this team during fall camp. It feels like there’s a sense of comfort with that group with all of the quarterbacks. Chris Brazzell did more today than he has all of camp. He was not full speed, but took part in some routes on air in a limited fashion.

Not saying you're wrong but that's just not the way they do it. The model from the NFL seemingly is to let them sit a year or 2 and then start. It's a gamble either way. Maybe a freshman Nico doesn't get you 8 wins. Maybe they get injured because they are an 18 year old playing against 21-24 year olds. I think you only play a freshman if they're your best option because the QB room is so bad or because they are just that good and you can't sit them, kinda like Trevor Lawrence.

How dare you not read the practice reports! No more sunsets after 8.30p for you for at least 9 months!

Probably not but I hope Aguilar can handle the SEC DEFENSES, the two games in 2023 and 2024 vs Power 4 teams his completion pct. was not very good.

In 2024 vs Clemson 43.9% completion rate. ( Okay crappy O-Line)

In 2023 vs UNC 51.2% completion rate vs the 94th rated passing defense .

Hope Aguilar succeeds but the SEC is a different beast compared to that juggernaut Sun Belt Conference....
He didn't have SEC players around him at App State.

If you have a significant family history of high cholesterol/lipids and heart disease then ask for a Cardiologist referral, then ask for a Cardiac Calcium score. It’s a specialized CT Scan that takes pictures between heart beats. It can look at your cardiac blood vessels in a noninvasive way.

My oldest nephew (more like a little brother to me) had a heart attack at age 49. I am 6 years older than him. I immediately scheduled an appointment with my PCP who referred me to a Cardiologist. I have been on atorvastatin since age 37 due to familial hypercholesterolemia. Strong family history of heart disease. My Cardiac Calcium score was zero. I panicked assuming that was bad (outside my specialty and didn’t read up about it prior. In my defense, he told me about it, there was a cancellation and I had it all in one office visit. Pure luck). He told me to stay on the atorvastatin and that my risk for a heart attack was essentially zero! Being a father of two teenagers made me feel much better about my future.

It’s definitely worth the time to get that information.
I have high cholesterol, and my NP (who I see instead of an internist) recommended a Calcium test as well. It came back zero as well, and it was reassuring. I am in my mid-40's. She is encouraging me to also take a blood test that can tell if your cholesterol is genetic. I haven't done that yet.
