Yes, Tennessee fans are no more toxic than any other schools fanbase. But their is common perception that we are. And you have to admit that sometimes an often repeated perception has the exact same impact as it being true.

It goes back much further than that...

Johnny Majors called our fans the legions of the miserable.

Your final point is very true. At some point we have to realize that whether or not we're actually any worse than whomever else, our reputation persists as being truly awful. When that is the reputation it doesn't take much to keep that alive, and we provide more than enough fodder to those who already believe it (and that is almost everybody that doesn't bleed orange).
