I feel that he has the mindset you look for in the top guy. Experience in different programs and the flexibility to adjust. I also like that he learns from what doesn’t work and doesn’t revisit it. If Mullen makes a move to the NFL, I think they snap up this guy or Herman fairly quickly. The more I see about potential replacements, if it comes to that, the more impressed I am with Napier. He's done well at ULL. The biggest thing to me is that he knows exactly what he wants in an SEC job because he's confident that he knows which programs have a high ceiling and exactly what he needs from an administration standpoint to compete at the top of the SEC...and he won't take a job that doesn't meet his demands. I think if UT were able to hire Napier, it would signal that the admin is going to get their act together and do everything that needs to be done for the program. I also think Napier is the best shot for longterm stability.
Maybe they are getting Urban lined up and using all of these other names as smoke to cover up what’s really happening. That at least sounds good and fun.Listening to Basilio, I'm not sure it's as dysfunctional as it appears. He believes that the new admin over there, especially Boyd and Plowman, know what they're doing. he believes we're going to Texas this thing and try to have our guy in place. I think making Friend pay his buyout shows there is some different leadership over there.
We should have offered him weeks ago, but indecision on what we're going to do means the assistant pool will be well picked over by the time our dysfunctional admin decides what to do. If Pruitt is retained, his options will be severely limited. If he's not, we're setting up our next coach to have a very small window to put together a staff and recruit. This time of year, every day is meaningful in trying to sway recruits and transfers. I get it. People are trying to be optimistic. Nothing about our recent hiring practices gives me optimism. If they wanted him that bad we were never in the discussion.
We can’t match dollar for dollar with them.
So he’s not so stubborn that he didn’t want change but the Admins said no. Hmm.
But thank you. That’s respectable
For those of you that think all of this will be better for us in the long run as long as Pruitt is let go, have very short memories. This is Tennessee. We are not going to get a slap on the wrist. The NCAA will bring their big hammers against us to show Alabama, Georgia and Florida just how serious they are about compliance.
I understand. But when you want a guy from a big school, there are only 3 available: Freeze, which ain't happening; Herman, who was just fired and has a reputation of not getting along with administration so probably not a good fit; and Gus, who is a safe but boring hire with a stale offense and also has a reputation of being arrogant and not getting along with administration. What bothers me is coming from a small school and has not proven anything on the big stage. I would not hire him based on that and out last two examples of Butch and Dooley stand out.
