Recruiting Forum: Football Talk III

"Coach Jones has spent the evening in the complex reviewing his staff and calling recruits. He called Jason Carr out of Memphis and Carr was happy to talk to the new top Vol.

"Yeah he called me earlier and we just talked about building a relationship and talk about this recruiting thing. It was good. I just told him congratulations on being the new head coach."

"I saw the press conference here on local television and I thought it went well and he seemed like a good coach. But, I'm going to wait and see what he's like when I meet with him in person and sit down with him and talk to him on my official visit."

He also spoke with Austin Sanders who was attending a banquet.

"I missed his call the first time. He told me he plans on seeing me real soon. I liked him and he had a lot of energy. He wants me to come up next weekend."

We will keep you updated on anyone else he talks with."

- Austin Price

This is why I like your post Ron. Good stuff here.:good!:

You give up an amazing recruiter in the Carolinas if you ditch Pittman. I seriously doubt Mahoney has the connections we need.

There are four coaches that have been with Jones since Central Michigan, Mahoney(OL)...Stripling (Asst. HC/DL)...Elder(SPT/Safety)...Bajakan(OC).

The DC, Janeck has been at UC for 3 years, comes from UGA(LB's)....this is critical.

I don't know their territories, I'll leave that for the recruitniks.:)

Sub Pittman for Mahoney and I'd be thrilled with those.

Hart said they discussed names. Let's just hope he doesn't get involved like he was rumored to have done last year with Sal.

I agree, but think that it is a good idea that Hart talked some names with him. Hart needed to make him aware that this is a totally different league that he is getting into...he's going from the Big Least to the Big Beast. You don't HAVE to bring your guys along that have been with you in lesser conferences. This is the best of the best here.

"Austin posted this earlier. I think we will have a better idea on some finalized stuff with his staff tomorrow. I don't think that the entire staff will be in place tomorrow. But I think we will have more of a clear identity.

Jones has met with all the current staff and he is watching tape of each units play and go from there. I expect Graham will be retained, but I don't have that from Jay or coach Jones at this point. But Jones made it clear he wanted a staff with a Tennessee feel to it.

I also believe there is a chance that Sam Pittman is retained.

Tee is a possibility but I don't think Jones has made that decision yet.

We are continue to chase on things with his staff as Jones continues to work through his options tonight and will continue to do so tomorrow."

Hubbs, Rucker, Brice, etc. all deserve a metal for their coverage of this search. We might not have liked what they were reporting, their statements, or opinions (I'm looking at you, Rucker), but they've done one helluva job at covering this from beginning to end.

Graham retained, Hinshaw is the only other assistant with a shot to make Jones' staff according to Rucker. I guess that's the end of Pittman.

I'm liking this hire more and more as I learn more about him. I watched some videos of him and his players today and was really impressed with his press conference.

If he keeps Graham and Pittman, I think that's a fantastic start for a staff. I'm very interested in who he plans on bringing in as his DC-that will be crucial. It sounded like a lot of the players were happy about switching back to the 4-3.

Lastly, I'm glad the search is over. I think we found a great one. I hope.

And I'm also grateful for this thread of sanity where we can discuss TN football.

Agree. Nearly impossible to cover this stuff.

Hubbs guess on DC...

"If I were guessing, I would guess his DC from Cincy who has SEC experience."

Rucker just said "only one guaranteed" to remain, others are being evaluated.

Hubbs didn't seem to think that was 100% true....guess we'll find out.

A handy little template to use, if you happen to find yourself in the unfortunate position of being a "Gruden Insider".

"Well, I'm back to 1._____. Now, I can't fully divulge everything because of 2._______ but I will say this, 3.________. You see, Gruden was completely committed and in the bag until 4.________. And don't believe this crap that his agent put out, that was 5.______. Well, anyway, I can say for sure now 6._______ and 7.__________

1. a. take my lumps
b. eat some crow
c. set the record straight

2. a. legal ramifications
b. my super duper important and powerful job
c. big brother is watching

3. a. I stand 100% behind everything that I said
b. anyone who doesn't believe me can go to h***
c. I have no idea what happened

4. a. The press conference
b. Dooley missed a bowl game and screwed the timing up
c. the Times Free Press article.

5. a. all part of the plan
b. a cover-up to distract from the real deal going on
c. an inside joke with Peyton Manning

6. a. Cheek will be fired
b. Hart will be fired
c. The fanbase will be even more divided
d. Gruden really wanted to be here.

7. a. I will never trust super duper powerful boosters again
b. The truth will come out one day
c. The truth will never come out.

.... Now you to can make a last ditch effort to save your e-cred. :hi:

No, he clearly stated the following:

"Both sources confirmed that receivers coach and recruiting Darin Hinshaw was the only other Dooley-Era assistant who would have a chance to stay at UT under Jones, but that Graham was the only sure bet."

Stripling is the interim for Cincinnati so he might not come.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Bajakian as OC, Janeck as DC, and Elder as STC at UT.

I think Stripling comes if he retains the DC For sure. He's the right hand man.

Its too bad if Pittman is gone, but I can see the value of bringing an o-line coach that knows the offense that will be installed.

Who said that? Rucker or Hubbs?

Dang, only stating the obvious, but losing Pittman will hurt.

Jones has at least a $3M budget for assistants, so he's going to have to pay somebody. I think the staff will look something like this:

OC/QB - Bajakian
RB - Graham
WR/RC - Weist
TE -
OL - Mahoney
DC/LB - Jancek
DL - Stripling
CB -
S/ST - Elder
