Recruiting Football Talk VIII

We have had a number of recruit threads go off the rails a bit with discussion surrounding football coaches at UT. I figured I would start a thread where we can have these discussions throughout the year to cut down on the clutter on the player pages. If this takes off, then we can sticky it at the top of the recruiting forum or we can let it fade into oblivion.

The most recent example of this was a discussion about Glen Elarbee in a player's thread. It is hard to argue with his success so far. Look no further than the beginning of his bio at utsports.com.

"Glen Elarbee has guided Tennessee’s offensive line to three straight Joe Moore Award semifinalist honors for the first time in school history to go along with multiple NFL Draft picks."

However, some have questioned his ability to identify talent in the high school ranks due to the fact that there has yet to be a high school player that he recruited start on the Oline since he has been here.

Here is your chance to discuss. Have at it!

Don’t really have much to say right now, just want to thank you for making this thread.

I have my criticisms of our staff. Especially with Elarbee and Pope. But it truly does get tiring to have to wade through the endless bitching and arguing from both sides of our fanbase when we just want to see some news. So I really hope people take the discussions here and stop clogging up the croot threads with their bickering, regardless of whether I agree with them or not.

So again, thank you lol. Have at it now boys

The unit performance is largely there and OL is the position most dependent on development over time. Is the HS player thing an actual problem or has it just taken a few years to recruit the guys we actually want on the line? Early recruiting was tougher because Heupel was unproven and we were under sanctions. I would expect more projects among the earlier recruits. Now that Heupel has proven he can get the job done and sanctions are a fading influence, it appears that HS recruiting is starting to pull the guys that actually have a chance to start. I would expect continuous improvement over the next couple of years.

Yep but it’s not like there aren’t other ways to fill a void a position like in the past.
Sure, there are other ways to fill voids. And sometimes, voids just don't get filled. Sometimes they get filled by lesser players. Lots of "ifs, ands, ors, buts" that exist. Flip Keys and we don't have to worry about those at the WR group. Sign Hiter and the RB room is set. Recruiting well fixes a lot of ills. Look at how set our LB room is. Level the talent gap between us and certain other teams, and the result on the field becomes more about coaching. When it's more about coaching, I like our chances.

The good news is that we will start to get somewhat of an answer this year in regard to his evaluation abilities.

I think some of it is Elarbee doesn’t really trust the ones he has recruited so far. There really isn’t a reason Sham and Bennett Warren isn’t ready to roll this year. 2025 will be a big year for that narrative though. Campbell/Spragg/Coop or the revolving door at LG couldn’t even get a camp invite, yet we couldn’t get any of the young guys meaningful reps.
