The San Diego Chicken is "Re-Hatched"

@knoxvol52 ;)

When Ted Giannoulas first put on his famed chicken costume in 1974, he didn’t appear at Padres games.

The San Diego State student was the KGB Chicken at the beginning of his amazing run and he appeared only at events promoting the station.

But as The Chicken’s reputation grew and his antics drew national attention, there grew a legal battle between Giannoulas and the radio station as to who owned the rights to the persona. Giannoulas won after a lengthy court battle.

Giannoulas then looked for the perfect venue to re-launch his act.

The Padres provided it.

On June 29, 1979, The San Diego Chicken was “re-hatched” before the Padres-Astros game at San Diego Stadium. It was a major event. National television crews were on hand to record the event. The start of the game was pushed back a half-hour for the “re-hatching ceremony.”

Even the umpires and the California Highway Patrol joined in on the fun.

The “San Diego Chicken” entered the stadium’s playing field inside a giant Styrofoam egg that was perched atop an armored car. Highway Patrol officers provided a motorcycle escort. The motorcade then stopped in left field as Padres players approached.

A group of players lifted the egg off the roof and placed it on the ground. On cue, The San Diego Chicken emerged from the egg — staggering around for a moment as a newborn chicken might upon taking its first steps to the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The crowd went crazy. The San Diego Chicken drew a standing ovation. And the night of antics had only begun. Giannoulas had considerably expanded his stunts during his hiatus. He put on a grand show.

And it was a show that almost immediately went national. The San Diego Chicken started appearing at sports events throughout the country. His act even went international. Giannoulas became the blueprint for the thousands of other mascots that now dot the sports landscape.

During the 1980s, The San Diego Chicken even had a television show with Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench as a co-host.

The “re-hatching” allowed Giannoulas to jump-start his career and expand The Chicken into the most recognizable mascot in sports. He started spending up to 250 days a year on the road, appearing at more than 6,000 events from private parties to being the Grand Marshall at major parades.

We just booked our first family cruise. Sailing on RC star of the seas in October.

I am going to miss the Tennessee at Alabama game. Ugh.

Anyone have any tips and tricks for things to do on the ship or excursions???
Oh wow, that's the newest ship they have. Its sister ship the Icon is supposedly really fun.

They have ESPN on the ship in the sports bar, no reason to miss the game.

Cruising is probably my favorite vacation, you'll love it. Book your dinner time NOW, don't wait. And don't do the my time dining, just book the early or late one. The lines for the dining room are insane, but especially the my time dining. The early one tends to be not as busy, and it frees up your evening for all the shows and other entertainment.

Don't pay for food, the free food is amazing. And you can order everything on the dinner menu for free. Don't limit yourself to one choice.

Don't so the drink package unless you and everyone in your room will drink double-digit drinks per day.

Book your show times as soon as they let you in the app, don't wait till the week of sailing.

You're going during the stormy season in the Caribbean, so bring anti motion sickness meds if anyone is prone to motion sickness.

What stops will you be making? Any scuba/snorkel excursions have been fun for me in the past. Or fishing/boating. Really anything you couldn't do yourself. Don't book a shopping excursion, for instance.

Balcony room is the way to go. Switch it if you didn't go balcony. Royal is awesome.

If you have young kids, folks bring little ducks and hide them throughout the ship so the on the lookout. There are like thousands of them.

Where are you sailing out of? And where are you porting?

I watched one of the Tennessee bball games on ours in March.

For all of you fellow outdoors-people, what do you do to combat gnats? I just got back from an inshore fishing trip and the gnats were bad. I pull a buff up over my nose but they still find a way down in there and up my nose. I don’t really want to go full head net because it messes with my ability to see subtle things on the surface of the water, but I had an infection in my throat several years back from a gnat and am now dealing with a sinus infection from one that got stuck up in my nose. Those bast#rds won't leave me alone and evidently my body reacts poorly to them. I need a better game plan before I head out for the next trip.
Vanilla extract and a dryer sheet

Try getting a fabric softener sheet, like bounce. Put it inside your hat. You can also rub it on your hat and maybe even try to rub it on yourself. I think the other thing you can do is tie a couple of them together around your neck like a necklace.
I've tried that before and it didn't phase them. I even tried some spray that some Louisiana fishermen swore by and it did nothing. These gnats are diabolical.

Son was playing in high school state baseball championship down in south GA many, too many years ago and the gnats were relentless. Ole boy from the area was watching me swat and spit a few innings and started laughing. I said dude, how do yall do it? He said don’t wash your drawers. They’ll hang around your A$$ and not your face. All I could do was laugh and puts some distance between us.

If one person in the room wants the drink package, every adult must get it. I’ve taken a handful of cruises, but just one RC. Everybody ***** on Carnival, but I think the longer length ones keep the rough crowd out. I think the main dining room is far superior on carnival, but RC has much more to do on this ship itself. The newer ones have a great water park/splash pad area for kids. I didn’t like that RC costs more to begin with and then all their good restaurants are an upcharge and the dining room was a letdown. I’ll type up more on ships and excursions after while.
