I think the Heupel offense is easier/more QB-friendly to run than what we've seen, and it's been somewhat bad luck for Heupel that his passing offense sputtered a little the last two seasons. You aren't alone in wondering.
Hooker was godlike at running it, so not taking anything away from him. He's the prototype for it.
But Heupel rolled with Milton in 2023 because the arm talent was enough to make him think that if he fixed him even a little bit, he would be hitting 3-4 deep balls a game and spreading the defense out all over the field. But Milton just couldn't rein in the overthrows completely.
And in 2024, he had a RS FR Nico with 1 career start who, let's face it, was fairly overrated. But it's not like he could bench him or recruit over him after 2023, so 2024 was his no matter what.
Enter Aguilar, who perhaps fits the HH mold more than Milton or Nico. Milton overthrew the deep balls and Nico was shy to pull the trigger and often late and underthrown when he did. If Aguilar can prove that's a threat again, the offense will be wide open for him like it was for HH.
