The Yankees retired The Babe's number 3 jersey in a ceremony marking the stadium's 25th anniversary. Ruth, who was 53 and battling cancer, was present for the event but felt too unwell to manage the exhibition game as originally planned. A crowd of 49,641 fans witnessed the ceremony.
