Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I’ve coached for years in basketball and just got into baseball. I know it exists, but our leagues are pretty good with not having over-bearing parents. It’s the adult coaches who bend or break rules or use petty things to their advantage that frustrate me.

I officiated basketball and umped baseball as a teenager. I admit that I can be critical at times as a coach, but it’s because of the effort, consistency, or being sloppy and not merely a wrong judgment call. But I’m thinking about getting back into officiating with my oldest son. They need younger people because some of the older ones that are left are struggling. I’ve been yelled at on the field and in my profession. I can take it, and I want my son to learn how to lead and take charge. I can protect him if we do it together.

I played GYAA in my youth and CYAA for a few years. For the most part, my memories are fond. This was back in the 90s and early 00s. I think it’s changed since then. I also participated in a lot of the GBC leagues and those were always good.

The one incident I remember in my playing days GYAA was my coach and his father being thrown out of a morning basketball game for arguing a call with a referee and then two parents of my teammates being escorted out.

Ik the “staff cant recruit” things a joke around here, but I think it’s kinda true
When we could pretend recruiting was a skill issue, I could pretend to care.

Who am I to say how other people spend their own money lol. I'll cheer for the team that rolls out onto the practice field in August.

Hey which one you can 3d print? I may need a few things printed for one the OH's doctor strange projects and I still haven't gotten a printer (trying to figure out space/set up/learning curve etc. before we take the full plunge). Would any of you be willing/able to 3d print OR CNC a few parts to a costume for us if I got you the STL files and pay your filament cost? OR do any of you know a trustworthy website I can use for this sort of project where I can upload files and have them print the objects?

I played GYAA but in the early 90’s. GBL now is very well run. Just need a bit of a youth movement in some officiating/umping.

My 2 cents…be a coach!

It’s so much fun! Of course there’s crazy parents but honestly if you talk to them up front and set an expectation then 90% of the parents will fall in line and be super supportive and the other 10% will fall in line becuse they don’t wanna be seen as an ass. I met with parents up front without the kids. My approach….we don’t ever yell at the players. In fact, I lower my voice when I talk to them so they have to concentrate to hear me. We don’t criticize during games…that’s what practice is for. We only talk about the good stuff on the way home…trust me, your kid remembers every detail of every mistake they made during the game….WE ONLY TALK ABOUT THE GOOD STUFF ON THE DRIVE HOME. Baseball is supposed to be fun and the coach and parents set that tone. Once the parents see their kids having fun and getting better and realize they’re an outlier if they act like a jackass they get right quick. My guys got screwed out of a covid year but from about age 6 to 12 is some of the funnest times you’ll ever have with your kid when it comes to baseball. Trust me, get involved with it, even if you're just a base coach. Your kid will never forget it!

I was fortunate to attend a seminar put on by a former MLB player who really made an impression on me for how to approach coaching little league. It definitely helped me form a plan to set a tone and expectation for the parents to ultimately create a love of playing the game. Most dads played and when you remind them about what it felt like to ride home hearing about every mistake they made…getting yelled at…how it feels when you strike out and your parents are watching….we all remember that stress. I could go on and on. You get the point. Talk to the parents and let them know we are going to love our kids and support them and teach them why baseball is the funnest sport and NOT TREAT THEM THE WAY WE ALL HATED TO BE TREATED WHEN WE PLAYED. Put that in their heads up front and follow through and you'll have the best fans/parents you can imagine. Again, I could go on and on but it’s really not that hard and crazy rewarding.
I loved coaching! The things I witness!
Our travel ball team had a girl playing on it, not just for show, she had the second best curveball on the team. You want to see something funny, watch a 11-12yo walk back to his dugout after being struck out by a girl🫣 this was 1996-97 or
In one game our starting pitcher loaded the bases top of the first, first 3 batters, so no outs. Head coach swapped pitchers, pick off play to first-1 out, pick off play to third-2 outs, pitcher had not thrown a pitch to homeplate. The head coach of the other team told the kid on second to stand on the bag or he was walking home😂😂
After the game parents and even coaches from other teams were saying they had never seen anything like it. Bases loaded no outs and you record two outs without throwing a pitch. Man! The memories❤️

Wtf is this ish
He literally took everything that Tony V said during the interview applied magic Arkansas pixie dust to it, and over analyzed it.

Tony is from St Louis, family is important to him. Tony Sr is around the program. Tony still has emotional connections to Arkansas.

Facts: St Louis is 5:25 from Fayetteville

Knox is 7:30.

The article sites Arkansas being easier to recruit too bc of its long success in baseball and its history, along with support.

Ok, lets assume that's true. Tony built this coliseum. its his show. he calls the shots.

We have a Nat. How the hell can they think they're ahead of us?!

If he's making $3 now, and they offer $4, you think D W is gonna let that happen with what we have invested in the Park?

Tony may be in someone's ear at Ark. And that may be his dream job. If that's the case it aint about money. But I live in real world.

Arkansas is NOT a better job. TN is hot, and he has carte blanche. His legacy will be made here.

Until I hear or see tangible evidence that he is willing or wants to leave. Its nothing more than a de separate fan base throwing noodles.

Pathetic.

If CTV ever leaves and I don't believe it will be anytime soon, the destination would be his alma mater Missouri. I truly believe CTV could be the Head Coach at the worst D1 team and still could recruit like hell and make them into a winner. He is that damn good.

Love UT but ARK is a better baseball job. Now if TV sticks around another decade and keeps doing what he’s doing then that could change but as of now it’s a better job (for baseball only). DW as AD does balance it out a little tho. The dude will give TV whatever he needs to compete at the highest level.

I'd be absolutely stunned if he decided to leave. I don't know if I've ever heard a coach speak so glowingly of an entire athletic program, including the close relationships and support they have from the coaches of other sports. I just don't see him leaving.

Random thought... because I think about things like this. I really like the idea of the Titans getting back to the light blue and red trim colors. Titans mythology as a logo has so much potential with their ties with ancient Greek warrior culture. It can be so much more than what it is.

Titans Radio Network’s Rhett Bryan, franchise legend Warren Moon shared that the new uniforms will be a “whole new set” with a “futuristic” aesthetic that aligns with modern trends while drawing inspiration from the Houston Oilers’ iconic design. This suggests a blend of contemporary styling with nostalgic elements, likely incorporating the light “Titans blue” color, which the team confirmed as the primary home jersey color for 2025, replacing the navy blue previously used. The Oilers’ influence could mean a nod to their classic Columbia blue, red, and white palette, potentially with sleek, modernized cuts or patterns.
