Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Yep
Parents are psycho
My son is 2 and I’ve told my wife I’m not coaching anything bc parents are insane assholes when it comes to youth sports
Some of my friends have kids 5-17 and they all say baseball, softball, dance, youth football, the parents get way out of hand. It’s like they are trying to relive their youth.
I will say my buddy whose sons play soccer say they actually never have a any problems with parents compared to the other sports
My 2 cents…be a coach!

It’s so much fun! Of course there’s crazy parents but honestly if you talk to them up front and set an expectation then 90% of the parents will fall in line and be super supportive and the other 10% will fall in line becuse they don’t wanna be seen as an ass. I met with parents up front without the kids. My approach….we don’t ever yell at the players. In fact, I lower my voice when I talk to them so they have to concentrate to hear me. We don’t criticize during games…that’s what practice is for. We only talk about the good stuff on the way home…trust me, your kid remembers every detail of every mistake they made during the game….WE ONLY TALK ABOUT THE GOOD STUFF ON THE DRIVE HOME. Baseball is supposed to be fun and the coach and parents set that tone. Once the parents see their kids having fun and getting better and realize they’re an outlier if they act like a jackass they get right quick. My guys got screwed out of a covid year but from about age 6 to 12 is some of the funnest times you’ll ever have with your kid when it comes to baseball. Trust me, get involved with it, even if you're just a base coach. Your kid will never forget it!

I was fortunate to attend a seminar put on by a former MLB player who really made an impression on me for how to approach coaching little league. It definitely helped me form a plan to set a tone and expectation for the parents to ultimately create a love of playing the game. Most dads played and when you remind them about what it felt like to ride home hearing about every mistake they made…getting yelled at…how it feels when you strike out and your parents are watching….we all remember that stress. I could go on and on. You get the point. Talk to the parents and let them know we are going to love our kids and support them and teach them why baseball is the funnest sport and NOT TREAT THEM THE WAY WE ALL HATED TO BE TREATED WHEN WE PLAYED. Put that in their heads up front and follow through and you'll have the best fans/parents you can imagine. Again, I could go on and on but it’s really not that hard and crazy rewarding.

I had a dad come out of the stands and threaten to kick my azz for taking his daughter out of the lineup with three minutes left in a playoff game. I was planning on putting her back in just resting her. A few months later he was DUI and rolled his truck with her in it unrestrained. Luckily only broke her leg. There were several other issues but that was the worst. I stopped coaching because of parents. This was 10U basketball.
Holy chit. Maybe I should've kept reading before posting….that’s insane.

It’s behavior like this why I will not participate in youth sports as a coach or as a referee. And these coaches and officials aren’t paid in most associations.

Youth sports parents are toxic. You’ll see the worst in people and it’s unfortunate.
After every game, every sport my son has participated in or I coached in…I thank every official, ref, ump, etc on the field or court. You can’t play the games if you don't have officials. I remind every kid that ever played for me that they’ll never play a perfect game…there’s always gonna be something they could have done a little bit better that day…always. And that goes for the umps too. We all need to reminded of that. (except for SEC officials, that **** is intentional).

Yeah...we are staying in a rustic cabin in Colter Bay Village..we have passed that sign at least 20 times already...and it makes me chuckle everytime. 😃

We've been loafing a lot on this trip since I can't hike anymore thanks to ky destroyed knees and no insurance, we usually do several short half mile to four mile long hikes....but I can't do it.

Right now me and my beautiful angel are sitting here in one of my 5 favorite buildings on Earth...The Old Faithful Inn...while our kids and grands are walking around the Upper Geyser basin (Old Faithful area)...it breaks my heart I can't do the with them this time, but the little boys are having the time of their life this week.
Sounds amazing........enjoy your time with family. :) :)

If you enjoyed sports. It’s awesome to coach them young and get that time with them. Sports and hunting is when my kids and I spend the most time together.
That’s how it was for me growing up. Rec ball was the most fun you could have. The friendships and memories. I’m 33 and still have friends just from rec league.
Shewweee don’t get started on the travel ball money these people are getting. Pop up tournaments $300 a team for a weekend. Geeez.
The travel ball thing seems like a huge racket. Everyone I know hates it, and I honestly don't want my kids to do it. But I also don't want to deprive them of it if they get really into baseball or any sport that has it. Tough situation.

Thanking officials is a great practice, but I have started seeking people out before the games. So many officials have bad experiences being accosted after a game that even approaching one in that context can put them on their guard. It’s unfortunate.
