It’s behavior like this why I will not participate in youth sports as a coach or as a referee. And these coaches and officials aren’t paid in most associations.

Youth sports parents are toxic. You’ll see the worst in people and it’s unfortunate.

Our referees (mostly consist of high school kids) make $25 a game. They try to put older parents as HU and the high schoolers in the field. None of the coaches get paid. It’s all for the love and so we can have teams. Not enough parents coach then you’ll have 20 kids on a team. That’s not fair to anyone

Little rant:
I got voted to coach my towns 8U softball all star team. I brought the 2 assistants that have been with me all year. I’ve coached the majority of the girls team for 3 seasons now. Most of the parents know me and how we operate. No coming to dugout during games. I bring water and other necessities for the girls.

I’ve had parents whisper/yell at their daughters really mean things.

So tonight we have a scrimmage to get ready for district. Our third base lady missed a pop up. No big deal. After the inning is over I talk to her about getting under the ball and we will work on it more next practice. The dad comes over and yells at her, she starts crying. I ask his daughter to come to the fence and cheer on her team with the other girls. He says it’s my daughter she will come over there when I tell her. I ask her again to go and she does so. I ask him what good does that do during the game. He said if I coached better he wouldn’t have to say anything to his daughter. I told him if he doesn’t like the way I coach, there’s a form at the beginning of every year asking parents who want to coach. Told him to put in for it. These girls are 8 yo. Man it breaks my heart seeing these girls cry cuz a grownup yelling at them. Please don’t let that be any of
Us with our children.

I’m glad you stood up to him, and helped encourage your player. Lots of folks like that idiot are quick to criticize and critique from the stands, but never willing to help out. He sounds like the Uncle Rico type trying to relive his glory days in local youth sports through his poor kid that has no choice in the matter. The teams I played on as a kid were usually not very good, but we had coaches that taught us the right way to play and be good teammates, winning wasn’t everything, and we always had fun. I still think back fondly on those days and think highly of my old coaches when I see them around town. I try to be that type coach when I help on my son’s ball teams. As long as the kids learn and get better as the season goes along and have fun, that’s the main thing.

Years ago I coached youngest son's 7- 8 yr old live pitch team. At tryouts there were guys with stopwatches and cheap radar guns. I looked for a fat kid to catch, who came in the expensive cars so they could pay for snacks and who had the hot Mom's just because. We had fun and laughed a lot. Won the league. Two kids from that league played pro ball and neither played any travel ball. Crap is WAY out of hand.

Yeah...we are staying in a rustic cabin in Colter Bay Village..we have passed that sign at least 20 times already...and it makes me chuckle everytime.

We've been loafing a lot on this trip since I can't hike anymore thanks to ky destroyed knees and no insurance, we usually do several short half mile to four mile long hikes....but I can't do it.

Right now me and my beautiful angel are sitting here in one of my 5 favorite buildings on Earth...The Old Faithful Inn...while our kids and grands are walking around the Upper Geyser basin (Old Faithful area)...it breaks my heart I can't do the with them this time, but the little boys are having the time of their life this week.

I think OF Inn (fireplace) and Lake Lodge (fireplace) have the most charm and character of any locales in Yellowstone. Used to go party there (OF) back in a previous life, on days off.

They were talking about softball/baseball refs on the radio earlier. They said they should recruit former players straight out of college who didn't quite make the pros. Seems like a decent idea, if it pays alright.

I’ve coached for years in basketball and just got into baseball. I know it exists, but our leagues are pretty good with not having over-bearing parents. It’s the adult coaches who bend or break rules or use petty things to their advantage that frustrate me.

I officiated basketball and umped baseball as a teenager. I admit that I can be critical at times as a coach, but it’s because of the effort, consistency, or being sloppy and not merely a wrong judgment call. But I’m thinking about getting back into officiating with my oldest son. They need younger people because some of the older ones that are left are struggling. I’ve been yelled at on the field and in my profession. I can take it, and I want my son to learn how to lead and take charge. I can protect him if we do it together.

Early 90’s in Hendersonville my son was in 9-10 aabc as a 9 yr. old. About two games into the season the HBC was struggling to make practices and/or games due to work schedule. Knowing I had played ball, he asked me to take the team. I did and it was a big mistake.
My approach was try to teach some skills and not break anyone…along with having fun. Several kids appeared they had never seen a baseball diamond let alone played the game. So I brought in a tennis ball machine WITH tennis balls to work on fielding pop flys (thought it might save some teeth) along with hours of soft toss against the fence (with actual baseballs).
We had a decent season placing 2nd in the league with 4 players making allstars.
About halfway through the season we had a bad, bad game. Lost 12-0. After the game we had our postgame meeting and I assured all the players that I would never get on to them for errors, pitching or strikeouts but the effort that game was terrible and we needed to do better.
One of the loud-mouthed mothers spoke up and said maybe we need a coach to put more effort in teaching baseball instead of tennis. I looked at her with a smile and said I agree.
We had to redraft players each year and the following year I did not draft her son. She made it a point to seek me out and thank me for not picking him.
That was my last year coaching (moved to GA) and easily one of the less dramatic issues I dealt with over my two year coaching stint.
People really do suck.
