I preface this with-- I do think he gets picked up, soon.

But, unfortunately it isn't that perplexing imo. It's a risk averse league and he's a pretty high risk low reward player, and yes it's entirely due to injury. had he bounced back to 900 and 8 last year? different story. he didn't.

if he gets hurt? that's a lot of resources your team is now paying out on top of his salary. i agree he deserves a shot but im not perplexed by teams not willing to spend a half million+ on salary and an additional quarter mill+ cleaning up potential re-injury for a udfa

its a sad situation for a great dude. Hope he lands soon and can build up trust with his position coach

Yeah, that's a head scratcher. To Virginia evidently. Must be something behind the scenes we don't know about.

He and Charles had the same bad agent who cared about making another buck. The unlimited NIL is potentially winding down and you have several agents squeezing the rag. It seems pretty clear we decided to become value investors and not high leverage for this season. The guys that left were competent backups that left for next level bags.

You hate it, but acting like any of it is driven by specific events (being broke) is fool hardy.

100% agree. It's an exaggerated example of why Sampson got picked up later: currently rehabbing and a ton of miles already on him.
Bru is even more broke down and has minimal production compared to Sampson.

What’s crazy is some have said the ‘20 team may have been his best until Covid destroyed the season.

IIRC, that team was 16-0 when the season was cancelled due to Covid

I mean, that’s exactly what I’m talking about. Obviously Heup couldn’t sell an impending retirement, but I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t have sold a financial push to get the team over the hump, considering they were in basically the same spot as Rick’s club. No offense to Josh; I just think Rick is better at that kind of thing.

But that completely annihilates the theory that there was no money to be had, December through April. (And again, none of us really know if money is even the problem regarding portal recruiting.)

Football has sold out, 70,000 plus, season tickets for 3 years in a row. There's money over there. Also, have 24,000 plus on their waiting list for season tickets

it starts at the top. Josh is not an intense, recruit your azz off kind of coach. Nick Saban could bring in elite talent no matter who he had as assistant coaches. We need to do a better job at identifying talent and have a few elite NFL players to demonstrate that our system works. Josh has done an amazing job in every other area of the program.

100% on board with Huepel, and I always felt like we needed a head coach that could win with less talent. That’s why I always had Chris Petersen on my wishlist going back to when we hired Kiffin. Huepel brings that to the table, and personally, I’ll take that over the ceo type HC that can recruit for us.

I do think he needs to surround himself with better recruiters in order to take the next step.

I come on and read for five minutes and I'm already disgusted by this fanbase.

We don't deserve good things to happen...we finally after 15-years of pureed HCs get a good coach that almost instantly and miraculously makes us relevant again...and ALL the scumbags do is piss and moan and hate on the guy.

Heupel doesn't suck...YOU ALL SUCK. I have said fir years that worst fans in sports are Idiot Margin Tennessee fans...I'm just not sure they are the "margin" anymore.

For you awesome Tennessee Vols for Life with a modicum of common sense gratitude and appreciation...I salute you, you are the best fanbase in spor️

I don't know if 2020 was Tony's best team (it's hard to say that 2020 was a better team than 2022 or 2024), but that squad had CWS written all over it. That team was going to have elite pitching in particular. The weekend rotation was going to be Garrett Crochet, Chad Dallas, Sean Hunley.

You may be right, but I think his current injury played a role.
