Recruiting Football Talk VIII

My take on the Jakobe's of the world is they are rhe biggest impact in NIL. Guys that aren’t your top dollar #1, but you plan to lean on, pay decent, and need. They know that and want to either shop the #1 deal or squeeze you for one in their current role.
we also have this recurring resetting of the market for all levels of players as more and more programs FINALLY get their NIL stood up, or FINALLY get their NIL funded, or FINALLY get their NIL fully funded by some aggressive booster(s)

so we have an idea of what we are willing to pay for good-not-great players or depth pieces, but if there are others out there willing to pay high dollar for depth pieces, or willing to pay your second string more to be starters, what can you do?

you'd have to overpay for bench warmers, essentially

then do you just become the rich program that will pay anybody for anything? at some point you have to set your standard and stick to it. if other people want to pay more for what we deem as less, then we have to be comfortable letting them do that

What I hope the college players realize... most of them aren't going pro a good bit want to accumulate followers and work in the influencer realm it seems.

Ya burn too many fans with constant NIL demands and you'll lose that too. At some point things will settle in...there's only so much of the pie to pay out, I'd say only a few dozen teams have real budgets to pay more than starters big chunks to sit and wait. Eventually things will calm down I think.

NFL can pay everyone because ya got so few teams and smaller rosters.

Just let this sink in... at 105 scholarships the SEC by itself has the same amount of players as the NFL teams on their active rosters.

Reality is are we really that low on depth? NFL teams manage to play 17 game schedules with 53 players. I know they can add a few players during the season but we have almost 80 scholarship players and another 30 walk ons. Most people thought NIL would spread the talent out and make some of the depth pieces be less talented and that’s what is happening. Despite the narrative on this board that reality is playing out most everywhere. The more you spend for depth the less you will have for elite deference makers. Teams are also adjusting on the fly because there are no rules. I just think it’s silly to pretend that this is just a Heupel and Tennessee issue. I’m sure even he would admit that he made some mistakes the last few months but he doesn’t have a crystal ball. Just a few random thoughts.

Spot on. Plus nowhere near the revenue.
