Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I saw it. That was a great post and fantastic advice I should have took 15 years ago. I was good with everyone's kids but mine. I still have parents tell me I was their son's favorite coach but my kids feel differently. I was too hard on them for poor play and effort. I treated them equally to everyone else at practice/games but some of those rides home were too much. I don't regret spending time with them but I do wish I would have shut up on the way home. Me being more competitive than the kids was not an excuse. They wanted to have fun and I wanted to win, which is a hard tight rope to walk as a parent/coach.

I helped coached little league football up until the boys were in high school and the 7-9 yrs old groups were the best. The kids listened and the parents (especially on my older son's teams), hadn't got to the point of thinking their kids were hall of famers. I always tried to get the kids in the right spots to be successful and have fun, especially if they tried hard and showed up to practice. The parents that drew up plays for us, skipped practices, and demanded their son play a certain position, didn't make it long around me. If you ain't willing to sacrifice your time (for free), don't come and tell me what you'd do better than me.

I was only in 3 real "altercations" with parents, refs, or other coaches but it never got to fisticufs. (Being 6' 1" 240 lbs keeps most of the morans on their side of the fence.)

I mean, clearly his actions, if true are 'scummy.' Don't you think he's earned the right for us to assess all the info?

What if he had an injury, and is addicted to pills? What if he has a disease that he couldnt pay bills?

I get where you're coming from, I struggle rushing to judgment every day.

How do you go from successful, well respected business owner and teammate to fraud artist? Only time will tell.

I'd hate to be in his shoes. Man, some people just make it hard on themselves.

Knox county schools are eliminating valedictorian and salutatorians from the school system. Anyone know why they would do this?
I read the article. They said it was because it is too much stress on the kids competing to be #1. But, I think it is a participation trophy/dumbing down/dei initiative.

Lol..no..dumb typo..."my" destroyed knees...

30+ years of flooring installation and a genetic predisposition to extreme osteoarthritis did that...plus many years of extremely hard living, beating the absolute hell out of myself by going 90 to nothing for days at a time.
What did you install? Carpet, hardwood, tile? That's a tough job, even once you're used to getting down on the floor.

Had a guy a few years ago sanding a pine floor in a "barndominium". You know how you have to hand sand the edges on the walls in between coats of poly? . . He got in a hurry and was sanding in 3-4' passes. The sandpaper snagged the edge of a splinter and it shot up through the paper into his hand, just below his middle finger, and went all the way through his palm to his wrist. If you know anything about sanding pine, those splinters can be 2-3" wide, maybe wider. His was about 1" wide. What a Pita.

He took peoples hard earned money with no intent on giving any back or product. Owes landlords $10,000+ in rent. He’s putting other people in hard times due to his thievery. He gave a company that he’s no longer apart of a bad name.
He still has control over his actions. Because (in this hypothetical scenario you put out there) he’s addicted to pills doesn’t make him less scummy for affecting other people.

Are we 100% sure that's what happened? Has he been charged?

Id say right now it aint looking good.

Since 2003
So Arkansas wasn't a better job before he got there than what UT is now? Tennessee/Vitello is on a faster track to build a better all-round program than what DVH has built in the past 2 decades. Vitello is only 3-4 years away from eclipsing DVH's off the field accomplishments and has already surpassed his on-field success. He doesn't have to follow anyone's footsteps and has an equally high ceiling here with an AD family most would agree is better than Arkansas'. He already has a National Title here, established his own recruiting, a huge paycheck, and the list goes on.

I don't understand how following into a program another coach has built is a better situation than what he currently has at UT. It will take him 3-4 years there to get things humming like they are here now. By that time his UT program will have equaled or surpassed what DVH built and it will all be TV's legacy.

Obviously, he needs to have his day in court, but all of this is alleged in the article. Two companies dropped him because of this behavior. It is highly unlikely for it to be untrue.

Right now ARK is a better job but I agree UT can (and will be as long as we can keep TV around for as long as possible) be a better job
Right now Tennessee is a better job. They have a better history for being better overall. But we have a Natty within the last two years and they have zero. And we are recruiting better and have a better win/loss over the last few years. Right now we are the better program and a top five program.

Tony isn’t going anywhere. He gets whatever he wants and he will win another Natty in the next few years.
