Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Plenty of individuals thought Van Halen was better with Hagar. I never really cared for David Lee Roth.
But DLR made them a huge attraction (of course, Eddie's mastery of the guitar). The songs were sometimes ragged, but boy they got the teenage boy juices flowing. Sammy was a much better songwriter.

UT - 24
LSU - 17

The 9-2 #11Vols played #10 LSU in the Astro Bluebonnet Bowl in front of 53,000. Condredge Holloway was the MVP, as he rushed 19 times for 74 yrds and 2TDs, as well as throwing for 94 yrds and a 32 yrd TD pass to Jimmy Young. UT was ahead 24-3 at the half, but All-American Bert Jones brought LSU back, trailing by only 7 late in the game. On 4th down, Conrad Graham intercepted a Jones pass at the 10 yard line to preserve the 24-17 victory.

Watched the SMU 30 for 30. Interesting that SMU is having a good season since they can legally pay players again. Also, I had a discussion with a colleague about new players like BYU getting involved since it’s legal. BYU being a LDS school probably wouldn’t have been caught paying players because of their religious beliefs, but now they can and will. I’m sure they have some big time boosters that can now feel fine doing so, but I really don’t know. The conversation was really around schools that may now jump up and pay players that are not traditional powerhouses.
Mormons have unbelievable amounts of money. You'd be shocked how many top executives are LDS relative to their percentage of the population. I agree with you, their NIL collective will be formidable. And the B12 is terrible, so like SMU, it won't take much to make the playoffs once they get rolling.

I still don't understand how the B12 got to keep their P4 status by just adding a ton of G5 teams. That makes no sense.

Only 4 group of 5 teams

Cincinnati
Houston
BYU
UCF

Rest are Big 12 and Pac 12 refugees...

Thoughts????

Didn’t read it.

But just going by the title, I agree, the social media **** going on is terrible for the program. The stupid NIL rumors are a terrible look. Some fans want answers and I can understand that, but going on social media and posting every rumor isn’t the answer. What recruit wants to be apart of that?

At the same time, questioning game/coach calls, decisions and asking for changes isn’t that bad. Those are more of observations and opinions.

Especially when he flashed potential in his few opportunities. It would be one thing if Mike Matthews looked overrated. But on the rare occasions he played he looked like our most talented receiver and one of the most talented players on the entire team. It's inexcusable that he didn't get more playing time.

Also why did Boo Carter have to strong arm the coaches into playing offense? I remember watching his high school highlights and thought he looked better on offense than defense. Huepel and the staff dropped the ball this past year when it came to Matthews and Boo. Both guys are elite talents that could have helped us.

This is on some Butch Jones/Alvin Kamara type incompetence.

You must have amazing access to the program since you apparently get to see all aspects of practice, film of practice reps and in-depth knowledge of our players understanding of the plays. Are you Peyton Manning?

Seriously though, I agree with the idea that MM could have been used more but he got a good bit of run for a true Freshman on a team with multiple upperclassmen WRs and a tight rotation. I like the idea of Boo on offense and so does Nico based off his in-season tweet. Nico doesn't make that post if the staff doesn't agree. However, you don't want to put too much on a young player.

Becoming a starting DB and returning punts is a solid load for a 1st year player. Let him master his actual position and then add some offensive plays to learn. And before any argument gets made to the effect of "Travis Hunter did ______".....this isn't Jackson State or Colorado and TH is a rare talent. Not disparaging Boo but he is not on Hunter's overall level yet.
