Recruiting Football Talk VIII

SIAP, but anyone else other than me getting a bit concerned that Tennessee may get left out at 10-2? Things are trending towards a lot of teams bunched up at 10-2 this year, and I’m now seeing 11-1 Indiana being projected as over us in some rankings.

Feels like things are likely to work themselves out with some crazy upsets during the back half of the year. But right now it’s looking like quite a few teams will be at 10-2 at worst.
Yes, I think we get left out at 10-2. NC State and OU pure sucking did us no favors. Bama would be our only “quality” win if we finish 10-2 with that 2nd loss being to the Dawgs.

After Milton got hurt and Hooker came in it took a few games for Hooker to really click in the offense. I remember that he was good but then it gradually flowed into great. I can’t remember how many games it took though. I’m hoping for the same with Nico.
Me too!

This was one difference that people tend to overlook.

with the bye week, Heard better be living in the physical therapy building...

luckily I do not think (unless someone posts otherwise) that we have anyone else really banged up from this game? Should be a good extra week for guys like Thornton to rest and heal... Maybe Squirrel can heal a bit.

While I don't trust the media or a committee, I've always thought 10-2 in any fashion would get us there.
At the beginning of the season, when we thought our 2 losses may be against really good Bama and UGA teams, 10-2 in the playoffs seemed almost a given. The season hasn't played out that way.

There will probably be several SEC 10-2 teams. Our Arky loss looks pretty bad right now, and the Bama win is looking less and less good. The OU win looks laughable at best. Same with NCSU. We have not built a terribly strong enough resume to be comfortable with another loss, even if it's to UGA.

We need to win out, or at least we need Bama winning out and we hope. Anything less than winning out, it becomes too questionable in my mind.

Agreed. Win out is the only scenario I see us making the playoffs. Poor SoS and the offense looking anemic at best during the meat of our schedule is gonna look no bueno in the eyes of the committee.

10-2 means we either lost to Georgia on the road or we lost to Vandy on the road and beat Georgia in Athens. I don't see us losing to Kentucky or Miss State at home.

Either way, I still think we are in the mix with that resume but the detractors will say A) They didn't beat anybody. OU bad, NCSU bad, and Bama not Bama anymore OR B) Big win against UGA on the road but losses to Vandy and Arkansas are bad.

Vandy would love nothing more than to derail our playoff chances. They'll be out for blood at home.

My BIL (Bama fan) told me last week he wants to be 3rd in the SEC. The 3rd SEC team will be in the playoff 19/20 times and won't have to play the SEC championship game. Also foresees a scenario where a 10-2 2nd place team gets beaten in the championship game and dropped from the playoffs in favor of a 10-2 3rd place team.

This has basically been my concern as well. Our SEC schedule has not been as tough as in year’s past, and NC State being pathetic hurts us. That Alabama win is doing a lot of heavy lifting. I think things will sort itself out, lots of football to be played, but at least right now it’s looking like a log jam at 10-2. You could have 5-7 SEC teams alone at 10-2, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas, Texas AM, Georgia, LSU, and Ole Miss.

Hypothetically, if we had finished 10-2 with those two L’s vs top 10 Bama & UGA (but played them competitively and close) then I think we probably would be in around that 10-12 spot. However, laying an egg vs unranked Arky is looking real bad and may very well be the thing that keeps us out if we don’t win out. As great as the Bama win is to us Vol fans they clearly aren’t the same Bama on a national scale so that takes some of the luster off just a smidge. Not a good SoS year for us but completely out of our control. Beat the teams in front of you and let the chips fall as they say.
