But didn’t OSU and OU do that with someone on staff? This is a whole new coaching staff and change of style. Will take a while to implement. And the more talent that’s lost the weaker the team becomes.
Yes, fair point. Day, Riley, and Kelly were all already on staff when they became HCs.

2 possibilities there: 1) he's saying that because he thinks he has to, because Saban is so beloved or 2) he's scared to death and really wants/thinks he needs his help.

I’m giving the benefit of the doubt that it’s 1 and out of respect. But man, DeBoer really walked himself into a hornets nest in Tuscaloosa.

In the modern era, just offhand, I can think of Ohio St (twice, with Urban then Ryan Day) and Oklahoma (Lincoln Riley after Stoops left). Oregon actually stepped up a notch when Bellotti retired and Chip Kelly replaced him, then when Kelly left Helfrich was really good for a couple years before collapsing. If you go further back, Miami did on multiple occasions. If you go even further back, Nebraska transitioned smoothly between Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne.

However, I'm not sure how relevant historical comparisons might be because of the transfer portal. "Coach XYZ inherited a good roster" isn't much of a thing anymore when guys can leave.
I was thinking of Kelly to Helfrich.

If Kalen DeBoer wants to know how it is to follow a legend, tell him to check out Earle Bruce and John Cooper at OSU after Woody Hayes retired..

OSU didn't sniff a title from 1979-2000.

Jim Tressell showed up and won National Title in his first year I believe..

And all for "only" a couple million more bucks per year. It isn't like there's some vast gulf between what Washington was willing to pay him and his Alabama salary. And Alabama is a way more stressful job.

I think Beboer is a good coach but you no longer have the Bama advantage of 5 star backed up by 3 more 4 or 5 stars. Plus, following Saban was a mistake. He should have waited out Harbaugh leaving, that would have been a better fit for him. He actually has northern ties.

They could really loose 2 games a month….

Eyeing Wisconsin or USF? Or both?

I could see each having a 25% shot and one of them pulling it off. @Wisconsin in the cold is intriguing. They gave LSU a good game. But imo USF will be the better team.
Would be glorious to see them and UT whip the new lesser bama.

You know who they should be pissed at rather than the NCAA? Their championship coach who decided to retire once the portal was closed and not announce his retirement back in November when things were still open.
Exactly, however they won't figure that out!! Ol Nickie did a good one that's for sure!! Loving seeing it all crumble!

You must not know of Lane Kiffen.
Dudes made more moves than a U-Haul truck.
If you think he’s locked in at ole miss , you definitely don’t.
Except he is locked in at Ole Miss. why? Big time programs won’t hire him. Look at the teams that could have in the past few years.
Florida
FSU
Bama
TAMU
Texas
Oregon
Tennessee
UCLA
LSU

All could have went for him. None did.
