I’ve leaned towards a big, but then I wonder if addition of Kent and a year development of Walker changes that at all.

Obviously 3/4 is our best position with GW & AS, so I would say best available whether it’s a 1/2/5.

I think the odds of adding a grad transfer at 4/5 who can help us is greater than 1/2.

If you could only add 1 player to next years team what do you want, let’s say grad transfer?

Big man to go with Alexander?
An off ball scoring guard?
Point guard?

It's really dependent on who can upgrade their skills from whom we've already got on the roster. Won't need a big if Kent and/or Walker can step up their game. PG isn't as big of a need if Bone, Darrington, and/or Turner improve at that spot. I almost feel like we need another 6'4-6'7" perimeter defender. But Johnson could potentially be that guy. If a freshman, I suppose a PG for the future is a good choice. The current 5 freshmen are Walker, Kent, Fulk, Pons, and Johnson. A ball handler and perimeter shooter is needed if/when they're seniors.

There’s definitely more quality guard transfers than true bigs...but given our makeup I do wonder how well another graduate guard would be welcomed, I think a big might fit better.

We are good at the post spot. Alexander/Walker will be a great center combo. If we could find a legit scorer to take over Bowden’s spot next year, I think we are cooking. We gotta have a guard that can create his own offense.

Also some tweaks in the offense would help

I hope that Johnson has just been slow to recover from his injuries and surgery. He could really be a scoring threat from 15' in. If he adds a reliable 3-pointer and eliminated the defensive mistakes he would be a serious contributor.

Simmons would fit that spot. Just a wait and see on how many underclassmen declare for the draft.

Usually if a guy hasn’t shown anything after two years he’s not gonna be much. I’d be highly surprised if Johnson get serious minutes next year.

The guy to hope for is Pons. He’s shown great defensive capability and elite athleticism. I have high hopes for him.

Johnson has had chronic shin splints and had it operated on in July. That would have affected his first year and the surgery in July didn't allow much time to recover, plus it set him way behind by missing most of the pre-season practice.

Exactly my point. I’m not counting on a guy who’s had injuries for two full years that weren’t fluke injuries.

Well, if the surgery fixed the problem then it's a restart. He has 3 years left.

Whose minutes is he gonna take? He’s not a PG so not Bone or Turners. Schofield is gonna get his. Alexander/Walker will get better and get more minutes. Pons is a better athlete/defender and is playing more than Johnson already and Bowden isn’t gonna be relegated to the bench. And that doesn’t include getting a freshman or a grad transfer potentially. He’s not gonna get consistent minutes next year.

We need all three. Got to make room. I think Darrington is for sure gone. I wouldn't be surprised if Fulkerson or Kent left if we got a better post option.

Johnson can be a 2/3 combo. I can't see Pons at the 2. If JJ elevates his defense he could take minutes from Bowden as well as play some 3. Pons can play some 4.

Barnes said he'd like to put 5x interchangeable 6'7" players on the court if it was a possibility. JJ fits the description.

JJ's minutes could grow in each of the next three years. That's what Barnes is building towards. Well seasoned upperclassmen.

Pons can play the 2 with a good shooter at the 3. Won’t be an issue at all. With some more work he can defend guards.

And you are making a ton of hypotheticals about what JJ will do. History shows in college basketball if you can’t crack a rotation in your first two years you probably won’t later on. JJ hasn’t show much while others are passing him by.

You're completely discounting that Johnson had surgery to correct a medical issue while hypothetically making Pons a shooting guard. Good stuff.

I understand being disappointed with him, and I agree that he’s been bad this year, but this post is classless and pathetic. He’s busted his butt playing for your team for the past two years.

Its not classless when a poster was asking about possible transfers. Fulkerson plays his ass off no doubt. But he brings nothing to the table but energy. We need space. And we need 6'10 post players. He would be an ideal person to transfer.

FWIW, I don't see Pons ever playing at SG unless we are devastated by injuries or just neglect to recruit the position over the next three seasons. He just doesn't have the skill-set for SG, and it negates his best abilities.

It wouldn't be too shabby in two years having Bone/Turner as a senior combo at PG; Pons, Johnson, Bowden, and Turner on the wings; and Williams, Walker, Fulk, and Kent in the paint. Plus 4 young guys as understudies. That would be an incredibly experienced lineup.
