Recruiting Discussion

VQ has been saying mom is really pushing the education, thus the additional trip to Richmond. Barnes and staff need to make a trip to see mom, or even better have her come check out the academic side of things at UT, and even speak to Mr. Dobbs!
Do we know what Grant Williams wants to study? Dobbs is a special type of player, Tennessee's Aerospace engineering isn't offerered at too many schools, thus, we had the advantage.

I get that, I simply meant possibly talking to a kid who also had his option of academic schools may not be the worst thing ever, it was more meant to be funny. Getting mom here and showing her around the Thornton Center etc. would be much more beneficial.

Yup, staff really dropped the ball IMO, that's what happens when you've got inexperienced guys out there on the recruiting trail SMH

As long as you are content struggling to get kids to pull the trigger when the competition is non scholarship and schools like Richmond then there is no reason to second guess the process.

For me if the mom is the hold up we should have done a better job selling her.

In fact you said something very similar a few post back

In what way would our staff be inexperienced?? Barnes and all of his assistants have plenty of experience recruiting. Doubt that's the issue.

^^^the fact is you've gone back and forth about what's going on with Williams multiple times, so suffice to say you aren't real sure of where things stand or what's going on behind the scenes. For all we know maybe mom has told him she won't sign and that's why things have dragged on, maybe they've been to see mom twice, who knows. This recruitment has been strange and he way I see, and I thought you had previously said, was its a waste of time trying to figure it out...we'll see how it ends soon enough.

My post were made with the assumption we haven't been face to face with the mom at all.

That's why I ask if there were reports we had been to see her.

Perhaps we have done all we can with her. If so the so be it and our sell job doesn't seem to be working for whatever reason.

Yes this one has been extremely odd and IMO Vq is likely wrong and we aren't even pushing here anyway.

It wasn't a bad idea or thought though. But really, has it been mentioned what Grant Williams wants to study in college? If it's engineering or business, Tennessee should definitely be in contention.

I'd bet college major has nothing to do with it. I'd bet it's the prestige of an Ivy League opportunity vs a state school.

As for visiting Mom (an earlier thread topic) apparently she lives in Houston, so I'm not sure how that complicates things. Does an in home with her without Grant present create any NCAA issues? Not saying it does or doesn't, but it is a different situation than usual.

You should check out this website, you're one of the ones who believes just because you have an Ivy League degree means your setup for a successful career, but the truth is far from it.

The Ivy Lie | Shattering the illusion of "elite education" and the mystique of the Ivy League, one unemployment story at a time

Offers a very insightful perspective from former students, Alumni and parents. Times are changing Germanicus, just because your degree or email address comes from an Ivy league school, does not guarantee a successful career. Depending what Grant Williams wants to study, Tennessee can offer an education on par with an Ivy League school.

Williams wasn't even that great of a recruit imo. Actually very glad we didn't waste a scholarship on him. I'm hoping we land both Fulkerson and Fernando to cap off the class, making it:

Bone
Johnson
Fulkerson
Fernando

That is a class loaded with potential, and Barnes has proven he can develop players.

Visiting the mom and the kid on the same day is just one visit. With our access to planes this could have easily happened. Maybe it did and it just wasn't reported

A more than interesting quote from Rob Lewis on why Tennessee has struggled in the 2016 class..

Also, in my opinion, I think that perhaps Barnes' overriding mandate from Hart when he got the job was to run a clean program--which he has a strong rep for. This is delicate, and I will let you read between the lines, but I think that cuts Tennessee out from the start on a lot of guys. Again, that's just my opinion.

Basketball recruiting has always been dirty. Makes me laugh when the "Pearl is a cheater" or "Tyndall was dirty" crowds start pointing fingers.

If you are a successful basketball program, then you swim in the dirty water. It's just the way it is and has been for a while.

Basilio is giving Barnes some heat on the radio right now. Jerry Meyer sent out some tweets talking about Barnes struggles on the recruiting trail which triggered a call that lead to the discussion.

Some points by Basilio and Sinclair:

- lots of things run thru the assistants now instead of Barnes
- no basketball camp this summer
- media and marketing has been non existent
- worried that Barnes is semi-retired and thought he was taking a sleepy basketball job
- thinks Barnes was a "CYA" hire made by Hart
- Barnes was hired because he was the easy fit for what we needed
- Barnes should be very visible right now and he's not
- Season tickets are WAY down

Not surprised at all except for the summer camp thing.

Wasn't that proved to have happened?

Yes this was discussed a few weeks back

That is a little kids camp. BTO said the prospect camp did happen.
Canceling a little kids camp Is nothing but bad PR and has zero effect on recruiting

I think Basilio is just pointing it out as another strike against him. Barnes isn't marketing his program. He doesn't partake in the stuff that endears you to fans. I'm starting to worry that Barnes is here for his final paycheck before sailing off into the sunset.

Little kids camp is good for PR I agree if that is what he is saying

He isn't making a big deal out of the camp.

He's more concerned with the overall picture and I'm starting to wonder myself a little.

Basilio admittedly said that he knows he sounds silly making a deal out of this when Barnes hasn't coached a game yet.
