I am intrigued too. I just don't see his presence determining our fate next season. He would have to be REALLY good to make that kind of impact. He just doesn't seem to be that kind of player, especially coming out a year early. Looks like he needs to refine his body, to me. Doesn't appear very cut or muscular. He does have nice footwork for a guy his size. Just doesn't look that strong, which is expected from a HS JR.

Oh I agree, I’m not sure he’s a difference maker...this team should be good enough that about the only difference maker would’ve been a guy like Simons.

TIFWIW...Rob Lewis says he continues to believe Tennessee will land DJ Burns and that the South Carolina visit was not much more than a courtesy visit to the home state school.

On Tre Mann he says Tennessee has weathered the official visit from Florida and that Vols are definitely in that one. Believes Mann is still likely to do something sooner rather than later and that the relationship between Lanier and Mann’s family is big.

Ok let's make it happen

What’s the holdup on Burns?

I thought people on here were panicking too early. Good.

What’s the holdup anytime a kid decides when his announcement is going to be? Rumor is he plans to do it at his high school graduation, if that’s the case and he wants to have a little ceremony hard to fault the kid for not doing it on fans timeframe.

That’s what I was getting it. If he has made his mind up then you’d think we would hear about an announcement date. Hopefully that is coming soon.

The kid is quiet, doesn’t do interviews and not much on social media at all...I get that today that is rare and we want him to keep us updated on what he had for lunch but that’s just not how he is.

Even still you usually here of an announcement date if there's gonna be one. If there's an announcement being planned then he's obviously not too quiet for an announcement.

That's why I asked what the hold up was.

Maybe he’s gonna post a picture on Twitter that day? I don’t know? I’m not saying he’s gonna have some massive ceremony with 500 people, who knows?

Yeah I get it.

I was just asking what the hold up is if he’s picked the Vols. If he’s having a ceremony there’s usually a date announced. If he’s just gonna post it on twitter then why wait?

Was just asking cause the signs are there for him to be a Vol.

Idk his reasoning, maybe grandmama has a birthday coming up, maybe he enjoys the suspense, idk. For all I know he may just show up to campus and enroll in classes and that’s how we will find out.

I don't think a coach makes those comments without a sense of entitlement amongst the staff. I don't think they recruited hard enough and I think it's caused us to miss at times. Not because they are lazy because they are not lazy. I've never said they were lazy.

They have struggled to close the deal in many cases.

Even if they didn't have a great chance with some kids that doesn't mean you don't recruit just as hard. I don't think we will continue to see the same success as this past year without some better recruiting. (side note: I think we will see recruiting improve) It's not sustainable IMO and we won't have the luxury of implementing a 3 year rebuild where guys are allowed to develop as 2 year starters playing .500 basketball.

The 2019 is of major importance IMO. Especially at the guard position. We need to land some ballers.

Gave you a like for your response. Agree we have struggled to close the deal but I personally think that can largely be attributed to the state of the program early on for Barnes (no longer the case obviously) and I also think Barnes' coaching philosophy/style is not for everyone (especially higher rated players who may want the coach to defer to their greatness to some degree since that is what most people around them for the last 10 years of their young lives).

My perspective differs with yours in that I believe Rick Barnes has recruited very well given the circumstances early (finding diamonds in the rough is much hard IMO than just "playing it safe" and recruiting the top 75-100) and was most likely being very judicious with his time between developing existing players and recruiting knowing early success was crucial to turn the tide (I do not know this for sure but willing to give the benefit of the doubt given the results).

Lastly, I cannot agree you should still recruit kids who have outright or virtually told you they are not coming which is what I was referring to (again, no one can know but I believe the top recruits wanted to no part of UT early on in Barnes' tenure and I cannot blame them).

1st paragraph - he’s recruiting his 5th class to UT

2nd paragraph - he’s done a good job of finding guys that can play and also he was credit for development.

3rd - nobody said recruit kids who told you no. I don’t think that happened. The perception around UT wasn’t as bad as our fans make out. Plenty of coaches at bad jobs have landed players.

Thanks for the response.

Just curious what coaches you would include in #3 in the last few years. I am seriously asking. Maybe Cuonzo, but he hired a father to get two blue chippers and had the benefit of getting another from St. Louis after Illinois had a coaching change. Maybe Avery Johnson? Maybe Andy Enfield? But they were implicated in the FBI probe. Buzz Williams? Will Wade is definitely one.

But I don't believe the list is long.

The list of coaches that landed more than 1 4* player in 4 classes or less is a mile long. Plenty of those were not a great jobs.

Eh, can't always restrict it to stars. By Grant Williams winning POY, his rating was lower than his production.

I understand and have continuously said that your argument has done validity. But it's not that cut and dry.

You’re changing the argument now. The topic was the perception of UT being bad and it scaring top recruits away.
