Recruiters on this staff

Yet Von Bell was quoted as saying UT is where his heart's at.... tOSU was just a better business decision...

Fact is, he didn't buy what CBJ was selling. Did CBJ try his hardest? I have no doubt... but his hardest wasn't good enough. That's troublesome.

the question should be: outside of CBJ, CJG, CTT, did the staff work as hard as they needed to

This staff has two very good recruiters in Thig and CJG and one average one in Elder. The rest are mediocre at best.

You said Elder was average and the rest are mediocre. Average and mediocre are the same thing. This is why you have no credibility.

Actually mediocre means "not very good" and average means " just ok" but that would be a hell of a reason not to have any credibility.

I think what you mean is I have no credibility because I don't think every player we signed is amazing and I don't think every coach we have is great. If you want to be Mr. positive that's fine but I see no need in being an annoying prick to everyone who doesn't see things quite as rosy as you.

Auburn did alright...

They had a chance with this class... sure it was an uphill battle and this outcome can be justified but one thing is clear, they proved they aren't elite recruiters. It can be argued Dooley's first class was better... and he only had 2 weeks right?

James Stone was bama all the way. .. Dooley flipped him.

Not getting Von Bell is inexcusable. .02 cents

James Stone could not stand LK. LK leaving for USC is what flipped James Stone to UT.

I am really proud of the accomplishment of our new coaching staff. They have busted their butts visiting and talking up UT! Based on what they started with and a short time to get there, I think they did a helluva job. I also believe the players want to be here and are excited about the coaching staff and will work just as hard. This coaching staff will coach them up and we WILL RISE TO THE TOP....AGAIN!!!
SOON

We have had high end recruiting classes bust time and time again. We wasted Eric Berry's talent, CP, and several others that would probably have been keys to national titles at several other schools. I don't blame them for being gun shy with us. Give BJ a chance to turn us in a new direction before we start smashing his staff for their lack of ability to fool people.

Yeah, but Ole Mi$$ doesnt play the meat grinder schedule we play year in and year out! Hell, nobody in the SEC does! Its not fair that we have to play Bama every year along with FL, GA and SC. Then, you still have the West foe to worry about like LSU, Tamu, Auburn and Arky. All of the other teams in our conference luck out and miss a lot of those cross division rivals. Look at little Vandys sked last year along with Ole Misses...freakin joke! Look at ours in 2011, this past year and this upcoming season...its suicide. How on earth can we ever dig ourselves out of this whole??!

Basilio said something that caught my attention yesterday. He said that Butch Jones is going to learn over time that this staff lacks recruiters. After losing out on some big time recruits today. Who might be some "recruiters" that we might look into hireing?

Disclaimer*** Winning is the only real measure. Regardless of why this class was 20th and not 15th or something ultimately does not matter. Jones will live or die based on what he does with the players he inherited and recruits.

That said, Jones took over a pretty bad situation. Dooley seems to have quit. Any early noise UT made with big time recruits faded as the season went south and Dooley realized his time was up. EE's were few. Big time recruits had already moved on to focus on other programs.

Worse yet, Jones found he had to cull some of the guys who were committed. They weren't right for his system... and he probably judged that some just weren't good enough.

He got UT back in the conversation for some guys. He got them into the conversation for the first time with other guys.

He and his staff weren't able to close the deal with many of them.

But only an idiot would say what Bassillio said... I guess that's redundant, huh?

Give the guy a full year to develop some relationships AND to prove he can coach. IMO, it IS A VERY narrow window of opportunity. Jones has to prove something THIS FALL. But to say that the staff lacks recruiters based on this one class is akin to saying Freeze can't coach because he lost to Bama this past fall. It may ultimately prove to be true... but there's not enough information to make that judgment now.

I don't think we can underestimate the impact all of the negative stories about the $200 million in debt have had on this class. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but it is very coincidental that every media outlet went big with the story so close to such an important day.

Here's our Rivals recruiting ranking from the past five classes...

2009 10th - Kiffin
2010 9th - Dooley (with a lot of help from Kiffin)
2011 13th - Dooley
2012 17th - Dooley
2013 20th - Jones (with not much help from Dooley)

Jones actually salvaged a deteriorating class after three losing Dooley seasons and finished 20th. Go look at Louisville's 2013 finish... 57th! Just think if we had hired Charlie Strong.

We will haul in a monster class in 2014. Next commit is Neiko Creamer tomorrow.

GO VOLS!!

Well obviously Basilio is not as blind as you and other sunshine pumpers. He know enough to know this staff sucks at recruiting. Only a blind idiot cannot see that !!!

I dont get you dude ... no way any judgement can be passed on the staff until after 2014

Willie Martinez mhas been a great recruiter in the past. I look for him to make a spash in the DB department next year.

Amen!
What if Dooley was still the coach?
I would bet my left nut that his class would have finished in the 27 to 35 range. Every year he went backwards in all aspects. People need to chill and let's judge Butch and boys by his record and next year's class. If it still sucks then I will call him what he is. But until then I can guarantee nobody has worked harder the last 2 months than CBJ!

This may be the most petty post ever. I have no credibility based on your definition of two words? You have issues

The words average and mediocre have been debated for as long as there have been dictionary's. The two words mean what you want them to mean depending on the context in which they are used.
