Record vs Draft picks

That team with 2 first round picks could have easily won 9 or 10 games. Losing to UCLA in Neyland Stadium was all on Kiffin. I can't ever recall a UT team wasting so much talent.

Way more Talent wasted on the 2016 team.

The last time UT had this many players drafted which also included a QB was 2010 from the 2009 team that was coached by Lane Kiffin. The Vols finished 7-6 including a bowl loss. Dan Williams and Eric Berry were on that team. I know no one like losing to Vandy or SC but 2010 team wasted more talent than the 2016

Kiffin would have done well at UT in long haul. That team actually played well under him as it was vastly underachieving under Fulmer. He turned Crompton into a reputable QB....they nearly upset Bama at Bama (actually should have won)

Kiffin would've already been replaced by now. He's never been able to hang-on anywhere for longer than 3 years in his entire career.

And we'd probably be on probation to boot.

Do any of you honestly believe Hurd had that much impact or is just a convenient excuse?

Was Hurd a distraction in the 1st half of the UF and not the 2nd half?

Was Hurd responsible for 7 turnovers against A&M?

Was Hurd playing D when UT pulled a Sunseri down the stretch?

I agree, something was wrong with Hurd and the coaches. But if he hated UT as much as many of you think he could have dropped the TD against UF, gotten tackled on the TD vs UGA, etc.

Such a good point. The "Hurd killed this team" argument doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Clearly didn't help, but anyone trying to use it as an excuse for the failures of 2016 is severely overplaying his hand.

A team with alot of promise that had various things work against it from injuries to key players DT position included to Chemistry with Hurd and Williams to poor decisions by coaches and some things that will never be mentioned around S Carolina game and poor performance by certain player. All adds up to the record we had. Not all Butch fault not all injuries fault and not all chemistry fault but a culmination of all things.

He beats ucla if he calls a toss sweep instead of running right into the teeth of uclas defensive line3 times from the 3 yard line ... that one was on lane.

If you have this much talent on a team but lose to South Carolina and Vanderbilt; I say that's more of a negative reflection on the staff than it is the team.

It is pretty inexcusable to have 6 players drafted and still struggle so badly.

Could have had 8 players drafted legitimately......

Just like the previous poster said, two of the players drafted were out for basically the whole season! That would give us 4 players being drafted that actually got meaningful snaps.

Really, That UT was rated top 10 preseason and had the best shot at winning a national championship in the SEC outside of Bama according to Vegas and literally every other stat that matters? That team did about what we thought it would, and almost stole one from Saban in Tuscaloosa. Jones hasn't "almost" stole one from a single good team (USCe is the closest, but considering Spurrier all but quit and that Jones two best wins have been on fluke 50+ yard passes it's hard to judge), but he has given up huge leads to good teams and lost. And anyone who thinks Florida or UGA were truly decent this year need only look at the games they played any real opponents and/or coaches.
