Reconfiguring the strip?

"the detailed design phase should be complete within 12 months" so lets give them about another 20 years to actually get the thing totally completed.

They were doing work on it yesterday. Made it a big pain in the ass to drive through there.

This is long overdue. I am all in favor for the strip to go to 3 lanes, with one lane of traffic in each direction, and a center turn lane with medians so that left turns can happen only at cross streets. This would basically make access to businesses right-in, right-out. This widens the sidewalk, but also widens the two lanes of traffic to allow enough room for bicycles.

Pedestrians have rights too.

I remember seeing the plan for this in a football program a few years ago and looked like a great idea. Like someone said, hopefully it doesn't take 20 years to complete.

It seems to me that the strip has way too much traffic to cut it down to only 3 lanes with one being a turning lane. Think about how backed up things get with 4 lanes now.

That was kinda my initial thought. I like the idea of wider sidewalks and such but traffic is gonna be bacccckkkedd up.

In the new plans thru traffic would be forced to use Neyland drive and only local would be allowed on The Strip once the main construction starts.

This is the worst idea ever. The left lane is already pretty much a turning lane for both sides and traffic is horrible... now they want to reduce that to one lane for both sides? Lunacy. Trying to push thru traffic to Neyland Drive won't work because people won't use it. They'll just drive down the strip until someone slows down to turn right and go around them in the "turn" lane.

The thread title had me expecting to hear stories of initials being shaved or photos.

So, what the hell are they doing over there right now? A whole block of Cumberland was ripped up when I drove through yesterday. Has this started already?

Nah, they are just making room for the orange cones. I swear they will start construction and leave those cones up for months/years.

They are doing utility work, and sewer system upgrades. Cumberland will be closed 24 hrs. a day Mon-Thurs until June 17th. So, what they're doing now has nothing to do with the reconfiguring of the strip I don't think.
