2. Bob Stoops, Oklahoma - National Championship in 2nd Year
3. Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma - Big 12 Champ & Playoff Appearance in year 1.
4. Kirby Smart, Georgia - SEC East Champ in 2nd year & Playing for SEC title as we speak.
5. Jimbo Fisher, FSU - National Championship in 4th year.
6. Dabo Swinney, Clemson - Ok I admit he had a rough start, but now he's the reigning National Champ.

Charlie Strong, Bret Bielema, Rich Rodriguez, Jim Mora Jr., Al Golden, Jim McElwain, Butch Jones.

All had HC experience prior to landing at big schools. All failed.

Of course outliers always exist, but to equate HC experience with future success at a different school is simply not true. It's more about fit, having a vision for the program, and executing that vision for the program.

Of the 7 listed, only Stoops and Smart became a 1st time HC at a new school. The other 5 were all promoted from within the same school and did not need to hire an entire staff or establish offensive/defensive schemes.

First it is always about the ability to get the Stud players that make the difference in all games. second coaching ability makes difference in equal talented teams. So for those who want Tee we would have the first one down because I believe he and his staff would recruit lights out. Second he would have to learn on the job trial and error and hope he learns fast from mistakes. Surround yourself with some strong veteran leadership coaches and go. If he is the coach named one day I will get behind. I hope though we can get back in with Brohm because I believe he can bring us back into Championship game quicker than anyone we been trying to hire.

Nobody truly knows how Tee would do here. That said, I have to trust that he will take "coaching" from Fulmer. He won't be alone on an island as if he had an AD who has never coached. There is a trust and relationship between the two. Not just employee/employer.

I think he'll recruit just fine...perhaps even bring Mays back. Mays IMHO is a Must for this class. Everything starts with the Oline. We have talent. We need to block for it.

Tee is not my #1 choice, but he's near the top of the list.

Hiring Tee is very high risk high reward. He could work out great, but could also fail miserably... we really don't know. If he doesn't perform well, people will be calling for his head and the administration will give him a very long leash bc he is a legend... it has the potential to create a very dicey situation.

I am in the group that hopes AD Fulmer stays away from the football coaches after they are hired. You can not have 2 chiefs trying to manage. Also the fact he has been away from coaching for 10 years. The game has changed. I read a lot of non Gruden folks complaining he had not coached in 10 years, but at least he has kept up with the latest trends. This is not meant to be a pro Gruden statement.

experience fails too.....look at our last 3! we've had more success in my lifetime with coordinators turned head coach.

Tee is a potential feel good story. OTOH poor results would leave him as a permanent ass't coach. A few more OC years under strong HC's can only improve his chances. Great if it is here.

You guys do realize that Tee interviewed for the Georgia Southern job and was not hired....So...How do you all feel now?

UT has never tried that approach. It seems like a lot of big programs are trying to go that way. One problem is there are more schools than proven coaches. Petersen, to me, has the best record percentage wise,I think.

It matters a lot because in this case the above coaches are the outliers.......1 in 20 first time HC’s have success. Maybe, it’s probably worse percentages than that.

How many “experienced “ HC have success?
About 1 in 20?

So did GS say nah we dont want you? Did they offer Martin enough $? Did both walk away? Was Martin looking for a raise?

So he interviewed be none of us know anything........right.

You can't just judge the head coach. You have to ask:

1. What was the school's situation before the coach came? Shambles or just need an extra push?

2. Who did the coach bring on as his assistants? Did Chip Kelly make Scott Frost or did Scott Frost make Chip Kelly?

Why did Dooley and Butch fail? I think they didn't have enough connections with better coaches. Kirby Smart hired successful assistants.

If we hired Tee, who will he bring? A younger generation of assistants?

None of these have ANYTHING in common with the situation with Martin. These coaches have been discussed in many other threads with their experience and situation noted.

Also do yourself a favor and go look at articles this year regarding the struggles that USC's offense has had. If he has struggled with the OC position, why would you think he would be successful at HC where he would need to "coach / mentor" other coaches including the OC.

He's not ready and there is a chance that he is not HC material.
