Rebuilding yr? With 7 upperclassmen starting on defense and 7 on offense?

Is it fair to call this season a rebuilding year?

Per UT sports depth chart vs SC: http://www.utsports.com/sports/m-footbl/2010-depth-notes/depth-sc.pdf

On offense:

TE 88 Luke Stocker (6-6, 253, Sr.)
LG 74 Jarrod Shaw (6-4, 331, Sr.)
WR 6 Denarius Moore (6-1, 194, Sr.)
WR 4 Gerald Jones (6-0, 195, Sr.)
QB 2 Matt Simms (6-3, 217, Jr.)
TB 28 Tauren Poole (5-11, 213, Jr.)
FB 45 Kevin Cooper (6-0, 242, Sr.)

Defense:

LE 57 Gerald Williams (6-3, 250, Sr.)
DT 97 Malik Jackson (6-5, 265, Jr.)
NT 52 Victor Thomas (6-3, 293, Sr.)
RE 84 Chris Walker (6-3, 245, Sr.)
SLB 42 LaMarcus Thompson (6-1, 228, Sr.)
MLB 56 Nick Reveiz (5-10, 224, Sr.)
LCB 25 Art Evans (6-0, 185, Jr.)

Out of 11 starters on offense and defense UT is going to lose 5 starters to graduation. Is it fair to call this a rebuilding year?

Next year we have only 2 returning starters on offense and defense who will be seniors. That's assuming Art Evans and Simms will be starting next year. We will have less senior leadership next season.

They lose Moore and Jones, Shaw they won't miss.
I wouldn't worry much about the attrition on defense, none of those guys are playing well enough to miss.
Stocker doesn't get enough passes to worry much about losing him either.

Somebody, I cant remember who, hit the nail on the head it a post last week. It was something like this, "We have to flush out the jr's and sr's on this team. "

Yes

rebuilding due to youth / experience of the depth. won't be different in 2011. still be rebuilding...

result of two short upper classes

sometimes rebuilding a program takes years. see Tennessee of the 70s

Upperclassmen made up of the 3 worst recruiting classes in Tennessee history. Next year will be rebuilding also.

After 2 coaching changes and with about 65 scholarship players left on the roster, if this isn't a rebuilding year, what the heck would it be "fair" to call it?

We aren't very good, but UT is losing 10 starters to graduation, with a recruiting class coming that has two 4* recruits in the entire class right now.

I don't see how UT is going to turn things around like this.

Most of those guys would be career backups at every other SEC school not named Vanderbilt.

UT loses 10 starters to graduation. The recruiting class coming in isn't good enough to replace all these players. UT has two 4 star recruits in the entire class. You think UT is bad this year.......

Those ten starters plus about two or three juniors are the only upperclassmen worth a damn at all. This is a rebuilding year. Almost half our roster is made up of freshman. Do you actually follow recruiting or are you just looking at the stars by the names?

I assume rivals knows more about recruiting then I.......and you do. They rank the class #24 right now. Thats not the kind of recruiting class to replace almost half your starters on offense and defense.

A no would have sufficed.

I believe this is why some of the older posters keep comparing this period to the 70's for UT. It doesn't seem very likely that a quick turnaround is in sight.

Maybe you haven't noticed, but the teams who have won the SEC championship this decade, LSU, Florida, and Alabama all have top 5 and top 10 recruiting classes every year. I guess you think that is a coincidence, I don't.

I think alot of those are starting, because they have been around, and the alternative is a freshman at this point. If our FRs were Sos that # would drop. IMO.

My opinion is that top 10 classes are needed on a regular basis. I also believe this class is going to finish very strong.

BTW, 31 of the scholarship players are freshman. Plus, Brent Brewer.

We will be ranked much higher by national signing day. Look at the guys who are high on us right now. The majority of the guys we fill the rest of the class with will be 4*. Several of the ones who are already committed might get bumped up to 4*. The main thing we need right now is depth on the dline and experience on the oline. Things will get better. Next year will be tough but 2012 should be a pretty good year.

Anyone with a modicum of sense knew that this season and next season were gonna be rough years.
