Reasons to think Tennessee will be BETTER in 2017

Do you think its expecting too much to go from a historically bad defense, losing the top two DEs, and top CB and becoming a dominate defense?

I do.

I definitely see the defense improving; Sutton was out half the year...and may have come back a game or two too soon...so that's a wash.

Will be hard to replace the production of Vereen and Barnett as tandem DE's, but there are guys who played well enough when they were in, and should be able to improve w/ another year and more playing time.

Interior DL and LBs is more questionable based on whether everyone comes back from injury and quality depth.

Think the DB's will improve w/ a new coach.

Whether that all equates to "dominate" is yet to be seen.

until Tennessee fields a mentally tough team that plays consistent football all 4 quarters, Every game, I don't think the Vols will make much noise other than an upset here or there.

Wasabi bro?

Don't you think "everything Hurd" cost that game? I mean, There was a reason, or reasons, that game was lost. I honestly believe that was the biggest reason. I personally don't say that as an excuse for Butch. In fact, if it was the biggest reason, it hurts Butch's "stock" even more, from my perspective.

If a team allows one non quarterback player to cause them to lose to a garbage south Carolina team, then Butch is even worse than I gave him credit for.

247 recruiting rankings-

2013- UT: 26 Vandy: 24
2014- UT: 7 Vandy: 46
2015- UT: 4 Vandy: 46
2016- UT: 14 Vandy: 53

Average class ranking last 4 years
Tennessee- 12th
Vanderbilt- 43rd

So, why should our second team not have beaten Vandy?

Is it logical to conclude that walk ons and 3rd/4th string players from spring camp through fall camp do not get the same amount of time/practice for their positions? Is it not true that those players develope slower than 1st/2nd team player's?

I swear, some of you guys are so hell bent on being right about Butch, that you don't seem to grasp, he might be worse than you thought.

You think it was the defense didn't execute and Dobbs had a rough night.

I don't disagree about the defense, I just wonder what the difference was from the games prior to SC. "They didn't execute". Why?

Wasn't injuries and it had nothing to do with Hurd.

For what ever reason Dobbs was way off in Columbia. That was the main difference in that game imo.

Dominant? I'll take somewhat competent or even fairly adequate based on what we saw last season.....either would be a major improvement

It should now be obvious why, sometimes I just have to laugh.

We couldn't get 10 wins the past two seasons, it sure won't happen this year. We've lost key players on both sides of the ball.

Absolutely correct. I don't know why we don't just drop football and add a ballet program so all the whining Nancies will have a better excuse to wear little pink dresses.

During the long off-season, when Sept 4th is so far away, it pleases me to speculate about the next man up. Who will replace the graduating seniors and early entrants in the NFL draft? How well will they play in the coming season? What is their potential? Whose names will be on everyone's lips? Will team 121's o-line gel? Will the QB throw lasers in the flats and perfect arches to WRs wide open down the sidelines? Will our corps of RBs seem interchangeable, each able to see the holes, accelerate like an F-15, change direction like an F-35, shed tacklers, and drag others for extra yards? Will our receiving corps pull in the imperfect or errant passes? Will our front four harry the opponents' QB, forcing poor decisions and throws? Will our LBs read the play, plug the gaps, tackle at or behind the line? Will our safeties hammer them hard? Will our corners break up and intercept passes? Will Team 121 play better than expectations or even hopes? Will these Vols win the games they should and even the ones for which they're given little chance?

Oops. Sorry. Didn't mean to interrupt your wallowing funk.

Ooo! Ooo! I know! I know! We can add Synchro swimming and develop a fierce rivalry with tOSU!

I'm more optimistic than some in here. But it all comes down to coaching. The talent is there still. Offense wasn't the issue last year.

Let Shoop bring his guys in, and let CBs learn to turn their heads, and keep us out of the hospital, and we will be fine.

Lots of firepower on offense. Still have JJ, Byrd, Callaway and others. Byrd and Callaway will take big steps forward with going from their freshman to sophomore years and the running game will be there as always.

If we can sure up the D, then we will be fine.

He said he'd been up till 2 or 3 AM several nights that week finishing a big project. He was tired.

I know that they are STUDENT athletes, but come on......

How does this happen at a major D1 program?

I am of this opinion.

SC and Vandy were total meltdowns. I mean, Chernobyl bad.

But a good enough roster still there to beat SC, Vandy, Missouri, and Kentucky. Even with an average coaching staff.
Win the games you should on paper and this season might not be a total step back.

SC, Vandy and KY bring back almost all of their starters, including their QB's.
