Reasons to be optimistic…

Crazy to go from Heisman front runner to forgotten after a couple games

That's ESPN for you.
Heisman is a joke

Once ESPN learned they can promote who they want to win the heisman.
(They found that out in 97' unfortunately)

It's a joke of an award they have the TV rights for it so they promote who they want to win it.

Saben had problems with QB play at LSU. Some schools just have problems at certain positions.

Tennessee has never had a problem recruiting QB's

What causes another reason for excitement to see Les Miles at Tennessee.

except this season lololol

Except ESPN doesent run the show at LSU...

It takes more than getting the right head coach. It takes the UT Admin allowing the new coach to bring in whatever assistants he wants. That is the reason we lost Cutcliffe when he was not allowed to bring the assistance he wanted. He then said "no thanks".

1. Even though it’s hard to tell right now, it looks like w/ proper coaching JG can be an above average SEC QB. Has all the physical tools. Hung tough in the pocket against Bama. Vocal leader. I think things will slow down for him against KY and So Miss.
2. Despite what some may say TN will be one of the most attractive vacancies this off-season.
Top 5: 1. Tennessee. 2. A&M 3. UCLA 4. Arky 5. Nebraska

Sumlin: Not getting to 9 wins. Even if he wins at FL Saturday. He will lose 2 of 3 between State, Auburn, and LSU.

Not sure about UCLA…Mora has a $10M buyout. He has to beat Oregon and Cal though.

I think Bielema is gone likely 4-8. Loses to LSU, State, and either Missouri or Ole Miss.

Riley is done at Nebraska. Remaining schedule is At Purdue, Northwestern, At Minnesota, At Penn State, Iowa. (I see maybe 2 wins there).

Thus we should have our pick, much like TX last year. We just need to avoid pulling an LSU.

3. So let’s look at these vacancies against the “realistic” candidates
Kelly: Turned us down
Gruden: Turned us down
Brett Venables/Greg Schiano: Not going to be a Defensive Coach
Bobby Petrino: Buyout is too high to stomach $4.5M and his persona just doesn’t fit this AD.
Frost: Per LWS, #1 Candidate. Forget Nebraska, I really think he stays at UCF for now. They will make a push to join the ACC soon.
Norvell: On the list. Arky will offer as well. Probably a better fit there.
Jeff Brohm: 4M buyout…can’t see us ponying up that much for a guy with that “thin” of a resume
Mike Bobo: Per 247 and Barrett Sallee, rebuilt CSU roster w/ a lot of GA kids. Been there three years—time to move.
Neal Brown: I think he’d take it if offered
DJ Durkin - ???
Campbell: Hugh Buyout
Chad Morris: Going to A&M
Mullen/Doeren: not getting either out of current P5 jobs. Risk not worth the reward.

4. So after we whittle the above who are we left with…
# 1.Scott Frost
Followed in some order by:
Mike Bobo
Neal Brown
DJ Durkin (Probably falling off list—lost 3 in-row…doubt he finishes w/ winning record)
Or some yet to be determined coach…Sonny Cumbie (TCU), Sterlin Gilbert (USF), Jeff Scott (Clemson), Jake Spavital (WVU), Chip Lindsey (Auburn)

It’ll be Frost or Bobo. So if Frost turns us down, then it’ll be Bobo. The reason I say Bobo, and I am not the first, is that SEC Pedigree and has had decent success at CSU (not an easy place to win). Currie is all business and probably and when looking at it through a Risk/Benefit lens, easy choice. Brown will be fall back.

Now back to the GOOD NEWS part. Any of these guys should be a SIGNIFICANT upgrade from Butch. I say that because they took over dumpster fires and turned them around. Some could argue Bobo was just following McElwain, but he had to break in a new QB and RB , and first year OC/DC when he took over in 2015. Lastly CSU has a top 10 Offense this year (16th Passing / 38th Rushing). Only loses this year are to Bama and Colorado.

Bobo was never problem at uga he avg 38 points a game. If he hired an elite dc he would be very successful I believe.knows sec very well and is a beast recruiter

At the end of the day Tennessee can do a lot worse than Miles.

I agree we can do a lot worse than Miles. And for awhile, I thought he was going to be the man but the longer this drags on, I am not sure.

If Miles was the man, we should have kicked CBJ to the curb by now and announced the hire. You know Miles is ready/willing, and the more this drags on, the worse it is for UT.

If CBJ is still sitting in his office this time next week, then we aren't considering Miles.

This is beginning to be my concern and thought as well.

Ole miss is begging to hire him at the moment. Currie seems to be following in Hamilton's footprints and let everyone else in CFB hire the good head coaches first. Then make a decision and have to pick from the leftovers.

If Miles is considering Ole Miss, then that is proof that he has literally lost his mind. It is not going to be pleasant for Ole Miss football in the near future.

I don't think he has lost his mind. I think that he is wanting to get back into coaching real bad. Ole Miss could make him a offer he couldn't pass up.

Ole miss job comes with the benifit in coaching with zero expectations for 5 years.
I'm sure Les Miles would much rather take a job like Tennessee with everything set up to succeed right away.
Depends how long Currie DRAGS HIS FEET!

But 5-6 million a year and don't need to be good for 5-6 years. Show me someone unemployed that wouldn't jump at that $$$$!

You put $20 million in the bank before they expect anything from you.

Les Miles is one of the top 5 best fits for the program right now.

Like him or hate him he has to be considered.

Tennessee is not in a position to gamble this hire.
Even if that's only 8-10 years from Les Miles you are still getting the best 8-10 years of the last 22 years of Tennessee football.

To leave him off your list OP is not doing your post justice.

Nobody does Les with more.

You may have forgotten to mention:
There are also coaches that can tell time and read a clock.

S

Yeah. It is. It is "not smart" to think that a coach that was mediocre at a school with LSU's recruiting advantages would succeed at a school where it is harder and with less instate talent.

Miles has a long history of failing to hire and manage a staff well.

If you are going to hire Miles... you might as well give Jones a 10 years irrevocable contract. They ARE the same kind of animal.

There are LOTS of coaches better than Miles on game day and many of them are just as good at recruiting.

keep your eye on Fuente. big money boosters are scrambling to try and fund am extension.

I am not a Les Miles fan, for us. But, he would be a definite upgrade from Jones. I am saying this based on coaching and basically recruiting. LSU can recruit Louisiana and have all 4 & 5 stars. It's a great state for football. We used torecruit there successfully. Can't remember who shut us out. We probably shot ourselves in the foot years ago. At Miles age, I want someone younger. UT us a destination job. We have the facilities, the fanbase, and Neyland Stadium. It is filled with passionate fans every gameday, except with Butch coaching. Our Search Firm will bring home the bacon, just like they have been doing for us lately.
