1. Even though it’s hard to tell right now, it looks like w/ proper coaching JG can be an above average SEC QB. Has all the physical tools. Hung tough in the pocket against Bama. Vocal leader. I think things will slow down for him against KY and So Miss.
2. Despite what some may say TN will be one of the most attractive vacancies this off-season.
Top 5: 1. Tennessee. 2. A&M 3. UCLA 4. Arky 5. Nebraska

Sumlin: Not getting to 9 wins. Even if he wins at FL Saturday. He will lose 2 of 3 between State, Auburn, and LSU.

Not sure about UCLA…Mora has a $10M buyout. He has to beat Oregon and Cal though.

I think Bielema is gone likely 4-8. Loses to LSU, State, and either Missouri or Ole Miss.

Riley is done at Nebraska. Remaining schedule is At Purdue, Northwestern, At Minnesota, At Penn State, Iowa. (I see maybe 2 wins there).

Thus we should have our pick, much like TX last year. We just need to avoid pulling an LSU.

3. So let’s look at these vacancies against the “realistic” candidates
Kelly: Turned us down
Gruden: Turned us down
Brett Venables/Greg Schiano: Not going to be a Defensive Coach
Bobby Petrino: Buyout is too high to stomach $4.5M and his persona just doesn’t fit this AD.
Frost: Per LWS, #1 Candidate. Forget Nebraska, I really think he stays at UCF for now. They will make a push to join the ACC soon.
Norvell: On the list. Arky will offer as well. Probably a better fit there.
Jeff Brohm: 4M buyout…can’t see us ponying up that much for a guy with that “thin” of a resume
Mike Bobo: Per 247 and Barrett Sallee, rebuilt CSU roster w/ a lot of GA kids. Been there three years—time to move.
Neal Brown: I think he’d take it if offered
DJ Durkin - ???
Campbell: Hugh Buyout
Chad Morris: Going to A&M
Mullen/Doeren: not getting either out of current P5 jobs. Risk not worth the reward.

4. So after we whittle the above who are we left with…
# 1.Scott Frost
Followed in some order by:
Mike Bobo
Neal Brown
DJ Durkin (Probably falling off list—lost 3 in-row…doubt he finishes w/ winning record)
Or some yet to be determined coach…Sonny Cumbie (TCU), Sterlin Gilbert (USF), Jeff Scott (Clemson), Jake Spavital (WVU), Chip Lindsey (Auburn)

It’ll be Frost or Bobo. So if Frost turns us down, then it’ll be Bobo. The reason I say Bobo, and I am not the first, is that SEC Pedigree and has had decent success at CSU (not an easy place to win). Currie is all business and probably and when looking at it through a Risk/Benefit lens, easy choice. Brown will be fall back.

Now back to the GOOD NEWS part. Any of these guys should be a SIGNIFICANT upgrade from Butch. I say that because they took over dumpster fires and turned them around. Some could argue Bobo was just following McElwain, but he had to break in a new QB and RB , and first year OC/DC when he took over in 2015. Lastly CSU has a top 10 Offense this year (16th Passing / 38th Rushing). Only loses this year are to Bama and Colorado.

We are not going to hire a no name up and comer this time. You left Les Miles off.

As for JG just a overhyped HS player. Game is too fast for him at this level

I think JG is a talented young guy... just like Dormady though in different ways.

However, JG has done nothing on the field so far to indicate he'll become an above average SEC QB.

Hopefully no one associated with the search will include Les Miles. He would be Butch Jones Part Deux.

That is not a smart statement. Miles is the ONLY Coach to challenge and beat Saban in the SEC. Butch jones along with most of the others on your list couldnt carry Miles jockstrap.

What about Mike Macintyre at Colorado? Hes done a pretty good job turning that dumpster fire around.. He has ties to Tennessee playing at Brentwood Academy and Vanderbilt. Only making 3.25 million a year..... Could be a realistic candidate that would actually come to Tennessee to coach.

Frost's heart will probably always be with the Huskers but he probably doesn't want to commit career suicide. Virtually everything that once gave Nebraska an advantage is long gone. They used to raid Texas and California. There are way too many good teams doing that now. They used to own the upper mid-west. That's no longer true and no HS player from KC, STL, Chicago, Minneapolis, etc remembers when Nebraska was good.

He may just have a dream that he's the one to resurrect them.... but the MUCH safer bet would be a program like UT.

As far as program loyalty to a favorite son goes... Nebraska fired Solich so they're no more loyal than any other program.

Yeah. It is. It is "not smart" to think that a coach that was mediocre at a school with LSU's recruiting advantages would succeed at a school where it is harder and with less instate talent.

Miles has a long history of failing to hire and manage a staff well.

If you are going to hire Miles... you might as well give Jones a 10 years irrevocable contract. They ARE the same kind of animal.

There are LOTS of coaches better than Miles on game day and many of them are just as good at recruiting.

Depends. Narrative is: He's not going to get those SE players he wants there. Plus he might not want to fail there. He is a hero there. Same why Peyti will never coach here.

I’ll summarize

Gruden. Soon.

More realistic than the last time... but probably not incredibly so.

He would make it interesting. He wouldn't be doing it for the money. UT might pay him a big sum or he might just turn it back to hire a great staff. At least in the short term, every recruit will listen to a guy that wears a Super Bowl ring.... but would Gruden have the patience or energy or make the sacrifices necessary to recruit?

You also have to wonder if he can "dumb it down" when it comes to schemes. College players have maybe 25% of the practice time to perfect what they're asked to run when compared to the NFL.

Les Miles is one of the top 5 best fits for the program right now.

Like him or hate him he has to be considered.

Tennessee is not in a position to gamble this hire.
Even if that's only 8-10 years from Les Miles you are still getting the best 8-10 years of the last 22 years of Tennessee football.

To leave him off your list OP is not doing your post justice.

I know he has some TN ties. I have seen him on some lists. Just depends on how "comfortable" he is there. Not a great record this year. But he's beat Bobo twice.

To some extent I agree. I guess it would depend on his flexibility to bring in the "right" staff.

The only way Miles is a "fit" is if you like what you've seen from Jones the last 5 years... because that's what Miles gives you. He's practically the same guy.

LOL

People may need to rethink Tennessee right now. Over the past 9 years Neb has only 1 with less than 9 wins........Neb doesn't need to be rebuilt.......people in Neb only want the coach fired because of Frost.
