really?

It was part of it.

Antietam, the Emancipation, New Orleans and the blockade was the crucial first step.

Vicksburg and Gettysburg were second.

Third was Sherman marching into the deep south and Lee not being able to move from Petersburg is third.

Once Grant changed the strategy from occupying territory to fighting the confederate armies, the war was essentially over.

Anything that happened after Atlanta was superfluous. Atlanta sealed the deal.

I don't recall the exact number he received from the Carolinas, but it was around 20,000.

The official account tells us that Lee lost 40% of his army, which would be 28,063. If you count the 6 weeks after the battle that number rises to almost 35,000.

Officially Lee got 16,785 of all arms from the Carolinas.

Grant also put Lee in Petersburg...... Grant is the winner.

?

You believe Atlanta was more important than controlling the Mississippi?

Yes. The capture of Atlanta assured Lincoln's reelection, thus guaranteeing that the war would be carried through to Union victory. The seizure of the Mississippi by the Union was far less important.

Really?

You don't think Chattanooga had already assured Lincoln's reelectoin?

Of course Grant beat Lee. I'm not contesting that. However, Grant defeated Lee through almost ruthless utilization of his superior numbers, not through superior skill.

He used his advantage, it has been a proven method throughout history.

Also, we go this route you have to put blame on Meade. He wrote to his wife the day after Cold Harbor about how wonderful a plan he set out and what a crushing success the battle was for the Union.

Oh goodness, just that?

If we are going to follow this line, Gettysburg officially showed the Democrats that the war could not be won. Chattanooga was the hammer that officially showed the democrats that no major field army could resist over any duration under pressure.

The election came down to internal strains within the democratic party itself.

The strain between the War Democrats and the Peace democrats and then under under the moderate Peace Democrats and the Radical Peace democrats assured Lincoln would be reelected.

****Team of rivals is an awesome book if you have never read it. It explores the political side of the war.
