Realistically, who of the 1st 6 games could the Vols have beat Sat?

with the lineups the Vols started and eneded with?

I say NONE. App and Ohio would have won and the Power 5 teams the Vols have played would all have won by at least 3 TDs. Easily.

Several guys made their first start Sat (KMac, EBerry, Buchannon, kid at LG) A couple were 3rd string or deeper at the start of camp. Add to it the injuries throughout the game and it was a cluster....

So if our 2's and 3's aren't good enough to play why recruit them? Take a look around NCAA at the top 10 and you see guys ready to play when someone goes down, our guys need 3yrs to be ready. That's a coaching/recruiting problem.

Oh look it is another one of these threads. Really, you couldn't have put this in one of the other dozen "injury" threads?

The good news is that the schedule gets easier and the players with no experience will get better as the season progresses

We would have beat Ohio. AppState I'm not sure. The others would be likely losses. But that wasn't how it played out. We are 5-2, with two losses to teams that most believed we would lose to preseason, top 20, with a chance to play in the SEC CG with some help from Florida. Enjoy it friend, the season is only so long.

Cast chicken bones for your answer. It makes as much sense as asking your question.

Completely agree. I think some were expecting a championship season while most realized 10-2 (which is still a long ways off) is reasonable to excellent progress for this program. There is still much left to be accomplished this season, but that in itself is reason to cheer.

It's football time in Tennessee and it once again it matters.

we are on track for 10-2 and playing in Atlanta. that is progress... great progress,

We are also about 3 or 4 # 1 recrutiing classes from being able to stand toe to toe with Alabama. Which is unlikely to happen. But that is the same problem everyone else in the SEC has..

Ours are ready to play just like other teams.
Meaning one or two mixed in with all the experience around them to help out.
If you have an example where other teams have 18 missing, I'm happy to listen and possibly change my opinion.

With this rag tag roster, 10-2 is not secure by any means. It will take good coaching and team focus to win out.

Agreed. Every SEC game is tough, but I firmly believe we will see Bama again in Atlanta. Our goal to win the SEC is still within our grasp, just need some help from Florida.

So you're on the train we'd compete with Bama if healthy? We only had 17 returners so by all accounts we should have had plenty of backups ready to compete which we did not. Since CBJ has been here the best players play almost every snap, it does no good to play backups only in need. Maybe try and get them some experience during action to spell out worn out starters, can't do that when you're in a dogfight against a mac team. The OL has been in this system for almost 4 yrs, there's a problem on the hill and it starts with recruiting. When's the last time we were in a recruiting battle with the elite for linemen? The only one I can think of is Richmond which was a 5* RIGHT TACKLE, and we change his position to left and wonder why he's struggling. Injuries happen but when you're coached properly day to day you succeed when called upon see Bama as reference, plug and play

Backups in some positions have been injured. Sapp was a good prospect to replace JRM , gone. Then McDowell was back up to him, gone. Who can play Bama with a 4th team LB and expect to compete (kid was the leading tackler which tells you a couple of things)

Started a 3rd team corner. Never expected him to start at all. Especially not against Bama. 4 guys got their first start vs Bama. You think that is how you start your career usually? A couple have (Dobbs, Jones, etc) but 4 in one game?

Who are you talking to?
You quoted me but I said nothing about the Bama game or almost anything you are posting?

Back to the original point, I'm not aware of a team that "plugs and plays" this many at once.

Nm. I know what you're doing. A complete moron or 2 will come along and give you a like, as if I said what you are pretending you're responding to.

Edit: look you caught one :)

App St, Ohio and depending on which team they field, Georgia.

You just keep pretending you know what the f*** you're talking about This team nor it's back ups we're ready to play My original post was simple, recruit guys that are ready to play. We didn't have 18 go down at same time, took 7 games to happen, when the backups were put in they struggled cause of coaching, Bama put backups against our backups and still dominated, and by the way I don't give a damn about a like on a silly message board

"Simple"
Just recruit guys that are ready to play in the SEC/against Bama. Not just the skilled positions but linemen etc?
Cool. Sounds like a solid plan.
