First, this is not directed towards any coach at UTK or elsewhere. I just have a general question regarding the best method for engaging in a coaching search. Bama has taken a lot of heat for firing Shula without having someone lined-up. Similarly, Aubie took a lot of heat for conducting a clandestine search, the whole "jetgate" episode. You could tell the coach that he/she is headed out and conduct the search in the light of day but you run the risk of having the lame duck and his/her staff sabatoge recruiting, try to create a schism among boosters, etc. For all I know they teach classes on this to sports management majors, but to me it seem slike a very dicey proposition for an administration.

I think it is one of those "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situations.

What coaching changes aren't dicey? We rolled more craps than Fred Sanford before we got Pearl! The real question is when do you realize that things aren't going to change with the current coaching staff?

good quesiton. I for one thing the timing of what ever process you choose is the most important.

two good examples this season:

1. UNC. the timing of how they handled Bunting worked out perfectly for them. and they chose option 1. they let him go well before the season was over, and as such, their search got started much earlier and they got the guy they wanted...Butch Davis. that did two things. it ended weeks/months speculation by current players and current recruits. and it allowed Davis time to begin contacting all pertinent partied (asst. coach candidates, recruits etc...) and not really miss too much of a beat come 2007.
2. Bama. If they get Saban, it will be considered a great move and handled the exact right way. but they are taking an awful big risk. they've alreayd been turned down by their original pick in CRR. they've been turned down once already by Saban. they have all their eggs in one basket. If they don't get him....then they are way behind the 8 ball in just about everything. And one has to wonder, if they don't get Saban, did they ever have a solid indication that he would even be interested or was this all a pipe dream????

Today's press and their "no accoutability" reporting make it hard to conduct a search in any proper way. I wouldn't recommend the Bammer method though...LOL

I agree, but another problem is can we get a coach who can lead us to the better direction other than Fulmer? I guess we have to be sneaky. Begin Contacting those candidates today about the potential hiring. 3 days After Fulmer retired, we would get a decent head coach. We don't want to go through what Bama got, we better be ready for that.
