Re: Best bars in Knoxville. . .??

The Long Branch is great if you're 40+ with a long gray beard and nothing to live for.

I laughed. Good analysis.

Is Charlie Peppers still kickin'??? How about Hanna's on the strip? I was at UT from 99-03, and primarily hung out at those two in my younger years. The later years were spent in the Old City (Barley's, The Think Tank (quickly defunct) ,etc).

Now, when in Knoxville, we usually hit up the Preservation Pub in Market Square or Barley's in the Old City.

The Strip is no more. It hasn't been the same since the fall of the Lap and the Library. Now, with the closing of O'Chuck's and Charlie Peppers, only OCI and Copper Cellar cling to the old tradition. Pick one if you must.

On the flipside, downtown is booming. Gay Street and Market Square have been renovated, and there are multiple great options for food, drink, and entertainment. Downtown Grill and Brewery, Sapphire, Preservation Pub, World Grotto... There are some reasonable options in the Old City, as well -- Urban Bar, Barleys, and a newer Irish Pub (name escapes me). Nice thing is that all of the above are are within walking distance of each other.

The Long Branch has sucked ever since they moved across the street.

Now, when in Knoxville, we usually hit up the Preservation Pub in Market Square or Barley's in the Old City.

Agreed on both. Pres Pub is a better bar. Barley's has better beer.

i think once they re-do the strip in the coming years, it will be a lot better.

shouldn't have touched it the first time.

Always a big fan of Toddy's or if it's too crowded just walk across the street.

Agree 100% on the strip Tall Paul at the Library was always a blast and you never knew what you might encounter at The Lap one of the great bar bathrooms in Knoxville how can you beat a steel commode.

Planned for the strip: Complete facial remodel(no idea what that means but it is what I was told) and they are going to make it one lane both directions with a turn lane. It will keep away "some" of the trolling and will help widen the sidewalks.

As for the bars, no idea. I moved back to Knoxville about 3 months ago after being away for more than 7 years. After driving the strip a couple of times, it is barren. NO Spicy's, Lap/Library(gone long before I left), CP, O'Charleys, Flamingos, etc.... Now the OCI is still there, but it is or was for sale a few months ago. If you go to the strip to eat, you better like chicken. There is Buffalo Wild Wings, Zaxby's, Guthries and Sawyers, with the latter three being basically the same gimmick.

As for me, we usually stay out West. Bailey's, Wild Wings, Smokey Mt Brewery, but then again I have only been back for three months. I am just twiddling my thumbs till Football Season.

As people know, I have an idea of opening a bar in downtown/Cumberland in the next 5-10 years. Still very new idea, though.

That is correct, sir.

The wife & I went to the Longbranch before one game last year & it was just normal UT fans who liked beer & the ability to smoke. We hung out on the upper patio with 30+ Vol fans and 1 Georgia bulldog who took a lot of grief......as he well should! Overall, it seemed like a decent place.

Normally we party in the Old City at Barley's or Pat O' Sullivans. Always a good time but I still miss The Library & The Last Lap......somebody get me a $3 big gulp!

Trivia: The original Ruby Tuesday's was on the end of strip toward the railroad tressel. My X worked there while she was in college!

I recently discovered Side Street Tavern, which reminds me a little of the Spot. Rooster's is good IMO, despite what some have said.

does Toddy's still have the horse shoe pits
Yes. Except it's officially just The Back Door Tavern now. The brothers parted ways. One took the liquor store west a block, and the other has the bar. Same good people and laid back atmosphere, but with more beer on tap and a few nice tvs now.

I'd definitely make a stop there! :toast:
