RB Strength/Size

Whitehead is a 225lb bruiser. Hodge is 215. Dee Beckwith, unfortunately, has been hurt...he can have an immediate impact all over the field. Seriously. He has practiced at wildcat QB, RB, slot WR, and out wide at WR....he is a mismatch nightmare at 6ft 4 235lbs, and fast.

I pull for Hodge because he is a hometown kid and all Vol...but if you guys have never watched tape on Lenneth Whitehead...there's a reason he was a solid 4 star across the board. He will be a factor in the future at RB...i am thinking CJP will try to redshirt either Hodge or Whitehead if the others stay healthy. Judging by PT so far, neither has cracked the top 3 RBs yet...probably still learning the playbook, as well as missing so many practices due to the virus bullcrap. They can each play in 4 games and still redshirt this season....

Anyway, we are deep at RB and have some good prospects for 21 as well. CJP has truly done an amazing job building the roster...and i am not a sunshine pumper. Time will tell if he is the coach to return us to greatness...but as far as recruiting and building a team from the trenches out, he has been outstanding. 4 out of 5 OLinemen are 5stars. Thats as good as it gets. We ran a QB sneak from the 3 yard line against Misery . GO VOLS. BEAT JAWJA!!!
Errbody redshirts this year...

Thats right! What a great year for it to happen for us, with a top 10 recruiting class loaded with 4 great WR in Hyatt, Holiday, Beckwith, and Callaway...2 big RB in Hodge and Whitehead, big ugliest on both sides of the ball, and 4 or 5 LBs which include the Memphis trio.... to have an extra year on a loaded class like this may be a big deal in a couple years.

Jabari Small isn’t a big back, but he ran harder on his few carries than either Chandler or Gray did at any point.
He did a nice job and did run hard. He did not run "harder" than those two and particularly not Chandler.

Looks good though. Very promising that he can be that 3rd guy.

We’re just gonna disagree on this one unless you can show me either of them trucking defenders like he did.

That's fine. One play doesn't make a guy "much" harder than a guy who has been running through traffic for 350+ carries. That play was "fun" but it is more likely he caught the DB off balance.

Even Gray broke some tackles. I think that part is still a concern but he becomes a real problem for opponents when he breaks the first level and finds "space."

While I agree that having some bigger backs would be a good change of pace and would help in short yardage and goal line, Gray has "take it to the house ability" and probably makes as many people miss as anyone not named Kamara we have had in a long while. That "foot in the ground" ankle breaker move he showed on the almost TD run into the North end zone was a thing of beauty. The Mizzou safety literally fell down when Gray faked right and went left. Similar move except left to right on his TD run into the South End zone. He is a dangerous man in space, the bubble screen for a TD was cool as well. Great movement by OL to get on the edge and get blocks but Gray was like a dart north and south for the TD. The Saints got a good change up with Murray as the big RB and Kamara as the "scat back". Hope one of the recruited guys can fill that bruiser role.

I said he ran harder on his carries than I’ve seen either Chandler or Gray. That is only addressing what I’ve seen from him on his few carries, not a statement about their respective abilities. Chandler and Gray obviously have a much larger and much better body of work. In fact, I’ve often referred to Chandler’s body of work when others on here wanted to bench him.

The announcers said Small is six feet. I thought he was smaller, but it goes to how big the other guys are!

I've always thought the ideal height for a RB was 5'10" or 5'11". I'm a tall guy but have always thought shorter, more compact guys made better RB's.

Agreed.

They can get lost in the shuffle between O line and D line easier.

Harder to get clean shots on as well.

IMO, Earl Campbell was and still is the benchmark for a RB. 5'11", 230lbs and an absolute beast. He was beast mode long before beast mode.

Never saw Chandler and Gray run over 2 dB at the same time like Small did on his first carry.

The best RBs find the end zone, break tackles, and rack up tons of yards. I don’t care how big & tall they are as long as they do those things.

My aunt met him in the Houston airport when he was still playing. She said he was an absolute monster... Incredible Hulk build.

I remember an interview during his playing days. He was asked, "How fast are you Earl?" His response, "As fast as I need to be."

That might be just slightly... ever so slightly embellished. He ran over #1 standing still with a full head of steam. He didn't run over #24. Still not bad. Bledsoe weighs 200 lbs.

It was one really. Guy he trucked. The other player (#24 I think) dove into the play and Small tripped over his legs.
