Ray Goff reflects on coaching against Johnny Majors

Dan . . . thanks for putting the article up, just wish you would scribe more of the interview as I tend to read more than listen . . . just sayin'. Ray Goff was a good QB for the Dawgs and a pretty good coach, he just didn't recruit like CJM or CPF to truly compete.

Again, thanks for posting.

GBO - beat the dawgs!

I was alive, but it was before my time when he was Georgia's HC...I didn't realize he was still that young. He's just 65 today and was 33 when he became head coach. I kind of see him as Georgia's version of Derek Dooley, except he still had a much better record. He was quoted as saying "They've gone out on a limb, there's no doubt about it" in response to his own hiring. lol

It was a flat out insane hire. The guy had no clue how to run a program or navigate the politics. If Georgia had gone with the original plan and hired Erk Russell, the 90s may have gone very differently.

Spurrier called him Ray Goof. Hahaha

Back in the early 2000s, I was in charge of transporting coaches to and from our local Touchdown Club and at one point had ridden to and from the airport with about half the SEC and ACC coaches. The reactions when I'd bring up Ray Goff we're almost universally priceless. Everybody thought he was a nice guy, but.....

That’s awesome. Sounds like a good gig. Who was the most fun to be around?

Hands down it was Ralph Friedgen. Dude is a complete riot.

That’s great. Even though I despise most things Maryland Terrapins, the Fridge always seemed like a good guy. That’s cool when people turnout to be like you thought that they would.

The last time Georgia Tech was really good was when he was OC. I know they went to good bowls a couple of times under Paul Johnson but they were a legit team back then, not gimmicky.

The week before the 1996 Cocktail Party (Jim Donnan's first season), Spurrier was having a press conference and asked the media during it "Ray Goff still coachin'? No? Who's it now...who? Donnan? Oh, ok."
Classic brutality from the ā€œOBSā€ šŸ˜‚

Jim Donnan was basically a Ray Goff with better players . Goff always seemed like an all right guy. Donnan was / is a douche canoe . I’m sure y’all remember but he cussed out CPF in front of at least one of Fulmer’s daughters for ā€œrunning up the scoreā€

Do you recall or care to disclose any coaches with a good guy persona that turned out to be an azz?
You'd occasionally hear them say something surprising, but I never really had bad experiences with any of them. They are almost all extremely outgoing, and easy to talk to by nature of what they do. They want to be your friend just in case lol. Can't say that I was ever surprised by any of them. Only guy that I wanted to eject out the sunroof was Bobby Petrino. He was dismissive and didn't seem to care whether I was there or not.

That sounds like exactly what I would imagine Petrino to be like ......

Should have sent a coed on a Harley to pick him up.

You should have told him you play volleyball...šŸ˜‚
