It’s funny how narratives change. I’m sure there would be some Vol fans who would rather have Gruden but I’d think the poll would be hugely in favor of Heupel. 80/20 Heupel? Before Pruitt it would be almost 100% Gruden, probably 75-80 Gruden when Heupel was hired.

Am I wrong thinking TN got a better coach than Gruden would have been?

Don’t think JG would have a better overall record than Heupel. Do you?
Absolutely stupid post.

Didn't want Gruden when they hired Kiffin, didn't want Gruden when they hired Dooley, didn't want Gruden when they hired Jones, would have taken Gruden over Pruitt but it would have been just as big of a disaster, and didn't want Gruden when they hired Heupel.
Gruden would have been 10 times better than Dooley, Botch or Pruitt. You are talking about 3 of the worst all time hires in not only Tennessee history but they are up there with the whole conference given the resoruses they had to work with here.

Debatable on Kiffin, at least at the time we hired him. I dont think He'd have us where JH has us now though. He may not have taken us to consistent 10 win seasons, but I know good and well he'd had us winning 8 on a consistent basis, and I definitely don't think he would have absolutely wasted the 2015 and 16 rosters like Botch did. He wouldnt have ultimately taken us to where all Tennessee fans want to be, and I think its mainly because he's not built for college, but to act like he would have been as bad or worse than Dooley or Trumpet blower is absolutely laughable.

I was hoping Kiffin would come back home after we fired Butch i think he would’ve really done well here in a second stint. He’s matured into an excellent coach i mean look at what he has done at Ole Miss in a short time and he stepped into a bad situation there. Saying all that though i’m more than happy with Heuoel being our coach he has exceeded my expectations here. I never got all the Gruden hype.

I know it's not the regular season, yet. But, how do these questions even get started?

I'd rather have the guy that is committed to the University (and it's traditions); Co-coaches; Players and Fan-base! -- Rather than someone who is most-likely only committed to a pay-check...

Say what you want about Gruden and his "connections" to Tennessee. But, I'm willing to bet that he has at least been approached before -- And he wasn't interested. (PERIOD)

Heupel has made us relevant again -- And THAT's who I'd rather have!

"Stick with the horse that got you there".
There's no such thing as "committed." When a player OR Coach gets a better offer, they are gone. Look at Urban Meyer, Mark Reicht, Kiffin, et al. Coaches are like the rest of us. They are going to go where it benefits them and their family. I wish that weren't true but it is.

There were 3 or 4 Birmingham Office calls like this in the first half last year.

And here I was thinking we’d miss Vol Calls!

Soon…

Just kidding. Those were fun and dramatic days. Winning with Heupel has been more fun than digging out of the cellar of college football like we were before him.
