Ranking Vol QB's - Andy Kelly to present day

Andy Kelly on this list is laughable, he was absolutely terrible , if we even had a average QB in 1990 we go undefeated

We always found a way to lose or tie to Bama since 85...before Peyton and Fulmer. That included Shuler.

Nonsense, he was one of our top 7 Qbs ever, and I'd take him over Shuler or any Clausen.

Manning
Martin
T. Rob.
Holloway
Warren
Kelly
Cockrell
Bray

Kelly never had one season where he threw more TDs than Ints. His career QBR is comparable to Crompton's and his TD/INT ratio is considerably worse.

I would put Dobbs at 4 given the context of his time here and the supporting cast he had.. I think he deserves a lot of credit for being along with Barnett and Kamara the one bright spot we had these past 10 or so years.

The guy is hands down the most underappreciated QB we have ever had. As a leader I think he was better than everyone on the list except for Peyton and Shuler. Imagine Dobbs on that 98 offense. with those backs and those WR's and those lines. No one on the list outside of Worley even has an argument they played behind a worse line and had less help. He did more with less.
Dobbs never threw 25 completions in a row like Martin did and martin was just as good a runner as Dobbs was.

1. Manning
2. Clausen (Casey)
3. Shuler
4. Dobbs
5. Martin
6-10. Anyone you want in any order you want.

Martin/Crompton overall were the least accurate qbs we've had in a long time.

Dobbs out rushed Tee by 1500 yards and was 2 ypc better

Asking for an undefeated season that year is asking for a lot. They played 3 top 5 teams. Tying two and losing by 5 to the number one team. They were also breaking in a revolutionary new defense called the 4-4.

Only game that year that could be pinned on Kelly was the ND game and even that is debatable since they were playing from behind and ND knew they had to throw it. Pickens even came out and said that Fulmer kept calling the same play over and over.

The two ties to Auburn and Colorado were bad defensive games. The loss to Alabama was due to Johnny Ball.

1. Manning
2. Shuler

So someone please list the team advantages that Dobbs had vs what Tee had?

Who had the better OL?

Better WRs?

Better RB?

Better defense?

Better coaching?

I will hang up and listen.
It's not even debatable, and it's also irrelevant. Football is about 22 guys coming together and putting up more points than the other 22 guys. It's not about who has the best stats. If you put Josh on the 98 team they would still go 13-0 and win the NC. If you put Tee on the 16 team they would still go 9-4 and fail to win the east. A few more or less points/yards here or there really doesn't make a difference now does it?

I am interested to see the opinions on this one. Please limit your rankings to guys who logged significant starts if you don't mind. Just list your top 10.

My personal ranking looks like this:
1. Peyton Manning
2. Heath Shuler
3. Tee Martin
4. Casey Clausen
5. Andy Kelly
6. Joshua Dobbs
7. Erik Ainge
8. Tyler Bray
9. Jonathan Crompton
10. Justin Worley

1. Tee Martin - won a SEC and BCS Title and beat the Gators in the process when the Vols needed a play he was usually there to make it. He would have been even better in a spread offense.

2. Peyton Manning - best QB ever at UT but he never beat Florida so he's second on this list. He had tremendous stats and was unstoppable at times. He threw a really nice deep ball too. No one was ever more prepared than Manning just wish he could have beat Florida at least once.

3. Casey Clausen - a big armed road warrior hence the name Ice Man and he looked like him too. He won in the Swamp and at Bama.

4. Josh Dobbs - he was certainly the best dual threat ever at UT. It would have certainly been nice to see him coached by a good QB coach as he would have been an even better passer.

5. Heath Shuler - a winner with probably the best arm on this list. Easily the best athlete to play QB at UT. He's another guy that I would love to have seen in a spread offense as he would have flourished.

6. Andy Kelly - when he played he was one of the best to ever play QB at UT. He was explosive at times but every now and then he would do something really dumb with the football. He's the only guy on this list from Tennessee and he had a sensational record as the starting QB.

7. Erik Ainge - he was up and down in his career but when he was up he was a playmaker and winner. He cost the Vols the SEC Championship against LSU but let's not hold that against him. He was a head case and injury prone too often to be any higher on this list.

8. Jonathan Crompton - it took him forever to figure it out but when he finally did he was tough to beat. It's a shame it took him so long to come around because has it been sooner Fulmer may have never been fired.

9. Tyler Bray - had a cannon for an arm, but like Ainge he too was injury prone and a head case. He threw a really nice deep ball too.

10. Rick Clausen - not much talent when comped to others on this list but played his heart out for the Vols especially at LSU where he led the Vols to a win.

He went 7-6 as a Senior. Not sure what was supposed to be so hard to beat.

based on that criteria ..... Manning, Tee, Heath, and Kelly, Casey are the only ones even on the list. Other were all easy to beat.

Yea, I probably should have worded that better and the light didn't come on for him until middle to the end of that season.

My ranking is as follows:

1. Peyton Manning
2. Tee Martin
3. Casey Clausen
4. Heath Shuler
5. Andy Kelly
6. Joshua Dobbs
7. Erik Ainge
8. Tyler Bray
9. Rick Clausen
10.Jonathan Crompton

Can someone please explain why Tee Martin is so high on somes lists?

Same line of thought that argues Jake Coker was a better QB than Deshaun Watson because the former "beat" the latter for a title. It's this strange conflation between the skills of an individual player vs team accomplishments.

No one’s ever said that Coker was a better QB than Watson.

No one’s ever said that Coker was a better QB than Watson.

And yet Coker's stats compare more favorably to Watson's than Martin's do to Manning's but here we are with some people playing the "this player gets ranked higher because of what the team they were on did/didn't do" game.

Taken to it's full extent the "won the championship game" argument would then be simply that every player, regardless of position, on that '98 team would automatically be the best player for that position in the modern era of UT football. It's just silly.
