Rank these QB's...

If I'm going to war, there's no chance in Hades I'm taking Heath Shuler ahead of Andy Kelly.

I agree. Andy Kelly wasn't in Shuler's league physically, but he understood that his job was not to make plays, it was to put the ball in places that allowed others to make plays. He probably managed the offense as well as any QB we've ever had.

I ran the math: Eliminating his freshman year, Casey had 8,234 yards passing and 60 TDs. I didn't erase the stats for Martin and Shuler during their years as backups, because they're statistically insignificant. For Martin to catch Clausen, he would have had to have a season in which he threw for 3,742 yards and 28 TDs. Shuler would have had to throw for 4,146 yards and 24 TDs to match Clausen's three year totals. God, I love debunking silly myths.

case closed on casey clausen. if that doesn't end it, there's no hope for some people.

Oh, yeah. Weirdly, I forgot all about Kelly last night. I don't know if it has more to do with the beer that I was drinking last night, or the beer I was drinking back in school when Kelly was the quarterback...

I'd probably slide him into my list in front of Clausen.

Why diss Ainge now? 2005 was in NO way all his fault.

Not all, but the majority of it was...

All he had to do was outplay Rick Clausen. I guarantee you that out of the 11 qb's listed, all of them would have beat out Clausen except Ainge and maybe Ryan. Hell, I'll take it a step further, if Brandon Stewart would have been competing for the starting job in August 2005, he would have played well enough to put sepearation between himself and Rick.

It's too bad players can't improve from their sophomore to junior seasons. I guess Erik Ainge and Robert Meachem will never do anything at UT.

Don't quite agree with that either, if the receivers catch at least half of the "catchable" balls thrown to them TN wins a few more games. TN winds up with 7 or even 8 wins and Ainge doesn't get "blamed" for a disastrous season.

I guess if Ainge wins an SEC title this year he's still "dog meat"?

But I do agree he could and should have outplayed RC but didn't, although I blame more of that on RS. I say that because from Ainges first game he progressively got worse instead of better, until DC showed up and coached him up.

Good thoughts. I agree that Erik had a problem with looking over his shoulder when competing with Rick Clausen and the indecision on the coaching staff didn't help matters. He plays with more confidence when he has the mindset that he is the man. I'm looking for great things from the QB position this year and hoping the young wideouts will help him out.

Jerry Collquit
Burney Veazy
Joey Mathews
AJ Suggs
Brandon (Guy that went to Texas A&M, I forget his name)
Jim Bob Cooter
Todd Helton
Jon Crompton
Brent Shaffer
Rick Clausen

Rank these guys 1-10.

If Ainge wins the SEC, I would pay you $50, shave my eyebrows and my head, paint my face orange, slapmy mother, buy a #10 Vol jersey and wear it down Kingston Pike with a sign that says "I appologize, Erik... you are the greatest QB in Tennessee history and I should have known better".

:good!:

Rank these guys 1-10.

1. Brandon Stewart (Starter at aTm)
2. Jerry Colquitt (what could have been, only saw flashes of his play when he came in for Shuler)
3. Rick Clausen (won big games against aTm and LSU)
4. John Crompton
5. Brent Scheaffer (beat out Ainge in summer of 2004 and had more raw talent, but lacked work ethic)
6. Todd Helton (great baseball player, but not many memorable moments as a QB)
7. AJ Suggs (starter at GT)
8. Joey Matthews
9. Burney Veazey
10. Cooter

Note: I would place Ainge about somewhere between 3-4 if you added him in the equation...

Ainge is arguably the best quarterback in the SEC. We won't win the championship next year, but it won't be because of his play.

There really isn't another QB in the league that you can say is heads and feet above the rest.

UT-Erik Ainge
UF-Tim Tebow
UGA-Matthew Stafford
USC-Blake Mitchell
UK-Andre Woodson
VU-Chris Nickson
LSU-Matt Flynn/Ryan Perriloux
AU-Brandon Cox
Arky-Casey Dick
UA-John Parker Wilson
UM-Brent Schaeffer
MSU-Mike Henig

Other than Henig and Dick(because of offensive scheme), any of these QBs could have a breakout year and be considered the best.

I expect Matt Flynn to do pretty well. I'm still not on the Matt Stafford bandwagon. I'd say the top 3 at the end of the year will be Ainge, Woodson, and Wilson, in no particular order.

I expect that as well. Tebow and Stafford may be the class after this year though. Nickson could be a real darkhorse.

If I had to rank the SEC QBs right now, I'd go:

1. Woodson
2. Ainge
3. Wilson
4. Mitchell
5. Cox
6. Nickson
7. Stafford
8. Tebow
9. Flynn
10. Dick
11. Schaeffer
12. Henig

If I have to base it on how they'll be viewed at the end of the season, I'd go:

1. Wilson
2. Tebow
3. Ainge
4. Woodson
5. Flynn
6. Stafford
7. Mitchell
8. Nickson
9. Cox
10. Schaeffer
11. Dick
12. Henig

Watch out for Matt Stafford. They've got a new guy calling plays and he's going to try to throw it all over the place.

Good point. I think Stafford is the biggest wild card of the bunch, along with Tebow. If Stafford plays like a 5* kid, he'll lead UGA to a division title.

There are all kinds of ways of rating QB's, some of them are very subjective (i.e., what kind of talent they had around them, etc.). But there is one you left off of my top 10 list: Alan Cockrell. Like I said, there are all kinds of ways to rate QB's, but let's take one example. How many TD's did a QB throw at UTthat went 80 yards or more? There are several who threw 0 or 1. There are two who threw 2 of these: Peyton and Casey, but there are only two who threw 3: Cockrell and Andy Kelly. Not just for this stat alone, but Cockrell is in my top 10 (or 11) list.

I liked Cockrell, too. He was one of the first QB's I remember playing. I had his #6 jersey and one of my brothers had a #26 jersey. I started really getting into football when Cockrell was playing. He may be one of the more underrated players we've had.

1. Peyton Manning
2. Tony Robinson
3. Heath Shuler
4. Tee Martin
5. Condredge Holloway
6. Andy Kelly
7. Jimmy Streater
8. Casey Clausen
9. Jeff Francis
10. Erik Ainge
11. Pat Ryan

I agree on your rankings of the SEC QBs. However, I don't think Mitchell is a very good QB. I didn't like what I saw. I believe Stafford will prove to be a much better and poised QB by the end of this year. He may even grow into the mold that the recruiting analysts were drooling over and have a break-out year.

Let's hope not.

UGA is in a bad situation. They need their true sophomore QB to turn the corner but they are also breaking in an almost completely new OL. Their WRs were horrible last year and they lost their main TE as well as a couple of their better RBs. They are extremely young on offense(all the way around). This is UGA though and have had a tendency to do the complete opposite of what is expected.
