I'd like to check it out, just to see sone stuff, but I really hate being a "tourist". What sucks is if I go anywhere for more than a week it's got to be in the winter, but that could work in my favor.

I didn't do the tourist stuff. I visited my brother when he was stationed in Germany many years ago. We just rode the rails to different places. Mostly villages and small towns in France, Germany, Austria, etc. I just wanted to see the countryside and sample some local traditions and food.

I have a friend who lives in Bavaria, in a perfect world Icould go there and then meander around through Germany and France. I could see it becoming a habit.
