That is about the right timeframe. I just believe what Murphy did with no protection around him in that weak arse Braves lineup is enough. His numbers were great as we're Raines.
Murphy's numbers aren't great. Just compare him to his postion. COMPARE HIM TO HIS POSTION ALL TIME, BRAH. I thought he was great, too. I saw him at Fulton County Stadium in '86 against the Cards. It doesn't matter who batted 2nd, 3rd, or 5th. Numbers don't lie. Your homerism does.
So are you saying Ruth didn't benefit from Murderer's row? Mantle had Maris. McGwire had the bash brother (and PED's). The big boppers had protection.
Raines had a different style. Lead off guys who hit for average can thrive anywhere (hence Ricky Henderson).
Plus, it is hard for anyone to standout offensively at first base. That's where you stick the guys who can't play defense but can hit for days.
