Right there with you, but I have about 28 or so left to go. Worth the time if you have it. This last trip I spent a month and drove 12000 miles and hit 14 national parks and just about every state in the west. I have been fortunate and have done that trip twice. But I also used to live multiple places out there. Can't do that sort of thing anymore though.

I'm fortunate enough to get five weeks of vacation a year right now. I'm tempted to schedule them all together next year and do this.

If you don't mind driving do it. I went alone and had the time of my life. I spent around $4000 for everything the last time incuding a rental car. Well 2 rental cars. Lulz.

The great thing about it is you have some of the greatest coastline in the county on one side of the road and giant trees on the other. Truly spectacular.

To me driving is the only way to go. I like to connect to the places that I go. You never know what you might discover.

You can probably do the loop in 3 weeks if you wanted too. I stopped off in So Cal to spend about 5 days with my family and I also spent longer in CO with some friends that I used to know when I lived out there. I just took the day to day approach and never looked too far in advance.

Best vacation that me and the wife ever took was one of those unplanned trips. Just wake up each day and say, "Where to from here?" Just go whichever way the wind blows.

Best way to do it Doyle. Just wish in all the times I have been out there that I would have seen Alcatraz. Might not be interesting to most folks. Note that if you or anyone else ever wants to do that you need to schedule sometimes months in advance. My carefree style interfered with knowing when I would be there exactly.
