It all begins with the initial design of the car. A team can design their car in a certain way and hope to be competitive. For instance this year Renault tried to use a unique exhaust design which had the exhaust gas exiting near the front of the car instead of the back. This was in an attempt to affect the aerodynamics of the car. So each team tries out different designs.
In the race itself you have deep tire strategies. Each driver must use both tire compounds during the race. Usually one compound is a bit faster while the other is more durable. The teams have to decide when is the best time to pit and what tires to put on when. You can pit at different times to try and put a gap on your competitor by running the faster tires or you can attempt to make the durable tires last as long as possible and perhaps make less stops than your rivals.
Don't forget weather, grands prix will happen rain or shine. Often this changing weather conditions will greatly shake up the nature of the race. Teams have to decide when to switch to rain tires and when to switch back to dry tires if conditions improve.
This is just a small bit of the strategy involved in Formula 1.
It's certainly not for everyone and I don't pretend that there aren't dull races, but I love it.
