I don't know if I want to be active in politics, I just want to be knowledgeable and diverse.[/QUOT

Being knowledgeable is key. Too many knee jerk ass hats out there that only get their knowledge from talk radio and dome idiot's cut and past postings on message boards. People need to actually think sometimes. Diminishing number of those that do...........on both sides.

You mean volunteered or drafted? No, there was no difference there. Everyone drafted or volunteered were listed as RA-Regular Army. Only NG's were frowned upon. They were NG=No Good. Only signed up for the money and benefits hoping they wouldn't be called up. Everyone else was RA and treated equally.

No, what I mean is.... I would assume that those who volunteered were maybe more mentally prepared or they were more of the type of people who could adapt to the stuff over there. It seems like if there is a draft you get a lot of people who really aren't made for warfare. Not saying everyone drafted struggled, and not saying that everyone who signed up fared better than others. Keep in mind that I have no idea what I am talking about and am merely hypothesizing.

I can't wait to go to Omaha this summer. I imagine that Nebraska will suck, but it's a few more states off my list, plus I get to watch the CWS and coach in a tourney there!!!

OK. When you have a draft, you do get all kinds of people from different walks. Not a bad thing. I'll get back to this in a minute. When you get volunteers, you don't get any better than any other way. What we're getting now is a mix of people who want to serve for all the right reasons and people who can't otherwise get a job. Not a good mix. But, who would complain...It's all volunteer. There were protests in the 60's and 70's because there was a draft. Most everyone was suspect to being yanked out of their life and thrust into a military obligation whether they wanted to be or not. Thus, protests. That threat is not there today so many are ambivalent to a lot of causes. In other words, if your ass isn't on the line, why worry. That's why, IMO, people are holed up in their Mom's basement playing video games instead of protesting what is wrong in this country. I would like to see the draft brought back. It definitely changes the political discourse.

I'm going to just assume the bold is not a dig at me :p

That helps put some things into focus. I have always talked with my friend that if the draft was reinstated that we would both just enlist. However, we probably would never enlist under normal circumstances. If I would have been of age on 9/11, I would have.

So the protests were not about fighting a war that they figured we had no business in fighting? People were just upset that they had been "chosen" and there was a threat of the rug being pulled from under their lives?

I liked what you said about those that enlist. I had never really thought of it that way. Is that why our area always has a high enlistment rating? I always thought we were just a courageous population, but...

No, was not a dig at you in any way. Was at some on here, but not you. You're on the fence trying to actually figure things out and not going to a talk radio show to get your opinions. I think that when your ass is on the line, your critical thinking process will engage and protest will be a result. When it's not, it's easy to sit by the wayside and whine. May not make sense to you.

We'll stop the political talk so other people will come outta hiding. I enjoyed the education, though.

New, all you have to do is read actual history and think for yourself. It's that easy. Some like to skip the thinking part and tune into FM for their thoughts and opinion.

I never have listened to talk radio. But you just got done telling me that history is most often white-washed so as to paint a prettier picture or portray someone in a better light!

So what do you consider actual history accounts? How would I know it if I saw it?
